Hi there, I’m Megan (aka Megabeth) and I’m going to be riding around Hains Point loop for 100 miles. I know, you may think that’s all kinds of crazy, but it’s true. I’m doing this to raise awareness and funds for the Washington Area Bicycling Association’s Women & Bicycles program. I deeply believe that getting more women on bikes will make DC a better place for everyone.

Come join me on December 23rd as I complete these 100 miles riding solely on Hains Point. Gathering at 9:30. My ride starts at 10:00 am and will go on until I finish.

Donate and/or join me for a few laps, several miles…or for the whole thing! Interested? I’d love to know if you’re going to be out there. Go here for details.

(Rumor has it that some other forum regulars will also be joining me…come one, come all!)

It’s a social ride, so come when you want…leave when you want.

All skill levels of riders, ages, women, men, and children are invited. Feel free to break off into your own pacelines, work on your sprint, or just enjoy the day however you like.

Bike decorations and costumes are strongly encouraged and will amuse me as I complete my 100 mile journey.

Even if you can’t make this ride, please I’d really love it if you could donate. Go here for details.

    ~~

Why am I doing this? In the Washington DC region, only 24% of regular bicyclists are women. We want to see that percentage to grow!

WABA’s Women & Bicycles program seeks to get more women on bikes through programming that will provide information targeted to overcome barriers to cycling, provide coordination and mentoring, create a cohesive network , and more.

Just remembered I have a 20 liter thermos with a spout that I can bring along filled with filtered water.

Weight was no problem, it was the drag. Antlers aren’t aero, apparently:

I snapped a few pix too, but mostly of the Proteus group ride down. There are a few HP100 pix

I want to thank EVERYONE who came out to ride and to donate to WABA’s Women & Bicycles program.

I have to say, my head is still spinning (yes, it’s going clockwise over, and over, and over again) with everything that happened just over the span of a few weeks.

I came through on my promise and rode 100 miles (plus two for good luck) around Hains Point and you all came through with your donations.

We are pleased to announce that the Hains Point 100 has raised over $1500 for the program. We also had over 100 riders show up yesterday.

This ride could not have been done without the generosity and support of others. From your bike decorations, to signs (Thanks, Kathy!), to baked goods, to people blowing on vuvuzelas throughout the day, to folks I’d never met before let me draft off of you for miles and miles – you are all near and dear to my heart.

Even better news! It was announced yesterday that there is now a generous program supporter that is now matching donations up to $4000. About $550 of the money raised so far from the Hains Point 100 will be matched by that grant.

So, if you haven’t donated yet, or you missed the ride, don’t worry, the funds donated to Women & Bicycles from now until the end of the year will get matched! Get your donation in here before the end of 2012.

    Again, thank you!

With regard to the idea of doing this annually, I wish you all could have seen the look on Megan’s face when I jokingly suggested, after the ride, that we do this every Sunday. It was priceless.

Megan, thanks so much for all that you’re doing! Merry Christmas everyone!

Sorry I had to bug out and only rode 7 laps with the group (51 miles for the day). Megan, what a great idea and thanks to you and everyone else who made it happen! :D :D :D

Amazing ride Megs! Fantastic support and help from so many people. Having a big table of food and lots of people around to help when I stopped for a break made all the difference for me. It kept me going. Thank you all. I saw so many folks down there… and missed seeing quite a few too.

I didn’t get a lot of photos for the day. My hands got cold early and they didn’t really work well with the camera for most of the rest of the day. Here are my photos from the day: http://www.flickr.com/photos/pedrogringo/sets/72157632326248850/

It was a fabulous last big ride of the year. Gave me the last opportunity I needed to make one last cycling goal.

    Rock on!!!

    Dirt.
