Hi there, I’m Megan (aka Megabeth) and I’m going to be riding around Hains Point loop for 100 miles. I know, you may think that’s all kinds of crazy, but it’s true. I’m doing this to raise awareness and funds for the Washington Area Bicycling Association’s Women & Bicycles program. I deeply believe that getting more women on bikes will make DC a better place for everyone.

Come join me on December 23rd as I complete these 100 miles riding solely on Hains Point. Gathering at 9:30. My ride starts at 10:00 am and will go on until I finish.

Donate and/or join me for a few laps, several miles…or for the whole thing! Interested? I’d love to know if you’re going to be out there. Go here for details.

(Rumor has it that some other forum regulars will also be joining me…come one, come all!)

It’s a social ride, so come when you want…leave when you want.

All skill levels of riders, ages, women, men, and children are invited. Feel free to break off into your own pacelines, work on your sprint, or just enjoy the day however you like.

Bike decorations and costumes are strongly encouraged and will amuse me as I complete my 100 mile journey.

Even if you can’t make this ride, please I’d really love it if you could donate. Go here for details.

    ~~

Why am I doing this? In the Washington DC region, only 24% of regular bicyclists are women. We want to see that percentage to grow!

WABA’s Women & Bicycles program seeks to get more women on bikes through programming that will provide information targeted to overcome barriers to cycling, provide coordination and mentoring, create a cohesive network , and more.

Signed up to do a few laps with you. I plan to bring the kid, since I think she counts as “women in cycling.”

We’ll be down around 2pm to help encourage some of those exponentially more challenging final laps.

It’s time for the latest daily supporter update (and trust me, there’s lots more to announce).

Exclusively for the ladies on the ride, four lucky rider/donors will receive a tube of Hoo Ha Ride Glide courtesy of The Bike Lane. (Yeah, I got to say Hoo Ha!)

    Wait, there’s more!

Bike Arlington! Bike Arlington was one of the first ride supporters and I want to give them a plug for all their ongoing support. But, they’d also like to reward you, too! One lucky lady rider and one lucky man rider will receive their own Bike Arlington jersey! And, 12 lucky pairs of feet (or 120 toes) will be so happy and warm on the ride in their own Bike Arlington socks we’re giving away.

Afraid you’re going to win some of this stuff and can’t carry it home? Don’t fear, Bike Arlington will have their bags on hand to help you haul home your loot!

Thanks everyone for your donations and for showing up for this ride in support of WABA’s Women & Bicycles program! Don’t forget to let me know you’re coming here: https://sites.google.com/site/hainspoint100/home

(I will probably this evening get an e-mail out to the people that have volunteered to help or provide day-of snacks or baked goods…hang tight. We’ve had an uptick in rider forms submitted so I want to make sure as many people as possible are included. Thanks!)

I’ve already got a BA jersey and socks, so please don’t put my name in the hopper.

Some have already seen this on the Facebook page but…

Like New Belgium beer? I know I do! (Especially after this ride!)

Like it so much that you’d like a jersey or a trucker hat or a pair of socks from New Belgium Brewery?

Well, you’re in luck! FIVE lucky rider/donors will receive a New Belgium Beer swag package on Sunday.

    Oh yeah!

Also, if you want to donate you can go to this new direct link to make your donations to WABA’s Women & Bicycles program.

If you are riding, please be sure you fill out the rider form on the Hains Point 100 page so I know you’re coming.

Hey Megan, I don’t know if you sent out any emails, but I didn’t receive anything…just a reminder that my wife and I (so weird that we’re a Marc and Meg too) will be bringing boxes of chem-warmers and we’re going to try and set up something for hot cocoa, although I don’t know if a sterno/chafing dish type of setup will be sufficient. But we’ll experiment.

Thank you for the chem warmers and the possible hot cocoa set-up! There will be many happy feets and tummys out there. :)

Just so everyone knows, no e-mails have gone out yet. We are combining one final e-mail to everyone with ride day details. We have had a major uptick in riders over the past few days so I want to make sure I have as many people who are intending to come on the list. And, there are a lot more details to coordinate because of the uptick…which is awesome, but makes more moving parts. Phew!

Even before this whacky event has occurred it has raised $1,000 for WABA. Congratulations to Megabeth for coming up with this. Good luck tomorrow. May the winds die down and the day be merry and bright.

As much as I’d love to bring the new bike down tomorrow for a few laps, I don’t think I’m going to be able to. I’ll try and follow along on Twitter, which will totally not be the same.

Consider this a bike decoration throw down.
