ParticipantOptions are good for keeping hands warm. Layers are good because you can take some off or put some on depending on how your hands feel. Try to avoid going with a set-up that has very few, but thick layers and no options for changing them. That can be a recipe for overheating and freezing. It isn’t comfy.
I have a set of wool, fingerless, convertible gloves that work pretty well. They have the little pocket that fits over your fingers to make them into mittens. I wear them over mid-weight fall cycling gloves. When my fingers get cold, I make them mittens. When they get warm, I flip the little pocket back to expose the fingertips of the inner gloves. When they get really warm, I stuff them in a jersey pocket. They’re rag wool, so they keep my fingers warm even when they get damp. This $20 set-up works ALMOST as well as my $200+ fancy glove set-up.

ParticipantHi, folks. Since Megabeth’s apparently just going for a long ride on Sunday, it turns out that I’m going to play DS on the ground. I – along with a number of awesome volunteers – will be manning the sign-in/feedzone/finish/tourbusobstaclecourse at the end of Hains Point.
I don’t have a full logistics checklist together yet, but if you’re planning to bring something to share with others, and you haven’t already indicated that in your signup, drop me a note via email (mbatblacknell.net)? Marc, if you want to bring some chem-warmers, or Bilsko wants to help with the AM coffee? Awesome.
My only challenge at the moment is trying to figure out how best to deal with water. The fountains are on, and I’m really not a fan of giant cases of plastic water bottles. At the same time, I’d like to have some water on hand. Anyone happen to have those wirerack/tap setups to use with a 5 gallon water jug? Or know where they might be gotten locally?
Honestly, when this first came together, it was conceived as an entirely self-supported ride with friends and their friends. And to some extent, it’s still that. But with so many generous offers of help, prizes, and whatnot, I expect the feedzone to be an excellent place to hang out, grab a bite between laps, and get any assistance you could possibly need*.
Really looking forward to this.
*But no one wants to hear about your issues with your mother.

I’ll be rolling back through Falls Church a little before 0900 on my way downtown. I may run into or over you.
I know Vince was looking for people to ride with from Vienna I can connect you two via Face-a-ma-book if you want.
I don’t know my exact timing for Sunday morning because I really don’t know what my pre-ride route is going to be. I’ll try and give you a holler when I get to Vienna. I may just be so intent on riding that I don’t really want to sit up and chat.
I was thinking of trying to arrive at HP just about 10am so there’s no dawdling around getting cold. I think I’ve seen that Vince fellow around some places. I’ll bookface him.

ParticipantMy wife and I have a couple of sterno cans, some chafing dishes, and I think a bunch of hot cocoa mix left over from our holiday party this weekend. Maybe we can set up some kind of makeshift hot cocoa station…unless someone has a VERY large thermos.

ParticipantRight now Weather.com is predicting 42 degrees and sunny.
I presume I’m not the only one that gets a runny nose due to cold temps so I’ll bring boxes of Kleenex and a trash can for use at the feed station.

ParticipantTwoWheelsDC – You guys are awesome (regardless of whether the hot cocoa thing works out). I just sent you a PM.

ParticipantIt will probably be just above freezing at the ride start and only a fairly narrow temperature range for the entire day. I did a hilly half century at that range last week and was comfortable (even slightly too warm in the sun) with the following:
Top half – Mid-weight merino wool base layer, mid-weight long sleeve jersey, light nylon shell;
Bottom half – Bib cycling knickers with cycling tights over them (windproof on the front of the legs) ;
Hands – Windstopper mid-insulation gloves with thin silk/wool liners;
Feet – Light over-the-calf merino wool ski socks, with light 3/4 merino wool socks over them;
Shoes – Leather spd with limited ventilation;
Head – coolmax billed cycling cap over fleece ear warmers under standard road style helment; and
Eyes – Tinted glasses.December 18, 2012 at 10:27 pm #957920Arlingtonrider
ParticipantI think I’ll add a face mask to my list of items to bring too. It was breezy out there this afternoon!

ParticipantIf it’s like today, bring a sail and you can do a century in two or three hours.

ParticipantI brought my pannier sails. They worked well on one side of the loop. Ready about.

ParticipantThanks, again, all for your help, support and, most of all, donations!
There are so many quickly moving parts (remember, I just came up with this “stunt” a little over two weeks ago). Your thoughts and input are greatly appreciated.
Now, here’s today’s update.
Here’s the list so far regarding day-of prize offerings. Lots of fun things and fun ways to win these on the 23rd:
– The first 50 riders will receive a special sparkly jingly gift to commemorate the day.
– Riders that donate $50 will be entered to win one of 15 copies of Elly Blue’s book “Everyday Bicycling”. (Thanks “Anonymous”. I’m very excited about this offering!)***
– Revolutions Cycles has donated several $20 gift certificates
– Java Shack has donated a coffee/tumbler package
– And…we’ve got some other great things, gifties, and JERSEYS (yeah, JERSEYS!) up for grabs from…well, I want to leave *some* surprises as we get closer to the ride. STAY TUNED!!!How can you win one of these things? Come on the 23rd and you’ll find out! And, you know I’ve got to say it, make sure you let me know if you’re coming here.
***To be entered to win the Elly Blue book, make sure 1) You indicate “Women & Bicycles” on the WABA donation site and 2) you fill out the “rider” form on Hains Point 100 so that I know you’ve given $50 or more and 3) show up at the Hains Point 100. Winners will be posted on site.

ParticipantUsed Big Nellie’s fairing to tack all the way home last night. Felt like a yacht.
