I thought I’d share a tip here for any beginners/non-clipless riders who might have cold feet about riding with us on Dec. 23. ;-)

I ride with toe clips that warm boots won’t fit into, but have found that I can ride in running shoes all winter long if I wear shoes that run a little larger than my favorite ones with one pair of thin socks and one pair of thicker wool or other wicking socks, and on very cold days, I stick a set of chemical toe warmers on top of my toes (not below them) on the outside pair of socks. The warmth from the toe warmers is enough to stay comfortable for 6-8 hours but does not make one’s feet overly warm, at least in running shoes.

Chemical toe warmers are environmentally safe, cost about $1-2 dollars a pair, and are widely available in sporting goods stores, some supermarkets and drug stores and Costco (in bulk). I usually carry a pair with me all winter and will bring a few extras with me on the 23rd in case anyone needs them.

Come ride with Megan and the rest of us – it’ll be fun! Donate too!

Totally bummed that I will be out of town for this. Best of luck and thanks for what you are doing. I think it’s a great idea/cause.

While there aren’t any climbs, the HP headwinds might be strong enough for people to run next to you in a devil costume or speedo waving the American flag. I know I would….

Megan, I made a map and cue sheet for the ride. Feel free to distribute as necessary.

You are the Anaximander, the Ptolemy, the al-Idrisi, the Piri Reis, nay, the very Mercator of route maps. :D

I’m not sure I understand the cue sheet though. It’s very complicated.

Still seeing temps in the upper 40’s for Sunday. No precipitation.

Will require some layers, but things won’t be freezing and falling off. (Because, yeah, that wouldn’t be fun…)

I’m in! At least for a few laps. Anyone want to ride in from the Falls Church area?

Proteus posted up a “group ride” down to HP to cheer you on and possibly join you for a few laps. See you there!

I’ll be rolling back through Falls Church a little before 0900 on my way downtown. I may run into or over you. ;) I know Vince was looking for people to ride with from Vienna I can connect you two via Face-a-ma-book if you want.

I don’t know my exact timing for Sunday morning because I really don’t know what my pre-ride route is going to be. I’ll try and give you a holler when I get to Vienna. I may just be so intent on riding that I don’t really want to sit up and chat.

I’ll probably be rolling out of Westover around 0845 or so, so I imagine I’ll see folks on the way in. I’m a bit terrified of doing such a long ride in 40 degree weather. I commute in it often, but commuting I don’t really need to worry about slightly over or under dressing since the ride is so short. I think I may just pack the car (my wife is driving down to provide moral support) with my entire winter wardrobe, just to be safe. That said, most of my heat issues stem from hills, which shouldn’t be an issue on Sunday.

I’m gonna roll down with Proteus by way of Bethesda. So if anyone wants a REALLY long ride from Bethesda, you can follow me down Sligo Creek, up the Anacostia trail system to Proteus, then back down with the entire group, and probably back up the CCT from Hains Point after.

My plan is to ride down (from MacArthur Blvd) -probably hopping on the CCT at the Foundry Branch tunnel around 9:30 or so and then doing Georgetown–>Rock Creek Trail–>Ohio Drive. I’m hoping to get there right around 10 and not have much down time because with as cold as its going to be I really dont want to stop and cool down too much.

I know some people have mentioned talking extra chem-warmer packs – I’d be willing to stop off at a coffee shop and pick up a to-go box off coffee+cups or something to help keep people warm.

Likewise, I’ll probably do a Costco run on Friday or Saturday and pick up a box of chem-warmers…so I can also pick up additional items in bulk, like granola bars, cups/napkins/etc or whatever, if these things aren’t already being supplied.

You had me worried there for a minute that you were going to also drive the car. ;)
