Tunnel under Canal Rd (West of Georgetown) – what happened there?

Hi all,

The somewhat creepy wet tunnel that goes under Canal Road and connects with the CCT has a slippery approach from the Canal Rd sidwalk, with a downhill grade and turn and (usually) moisture. I have seen wipeouts there before. Today when going through there I noticed what looked like a little memorial at the entry to the tunnel – some flowers and a bike helmet and maybe more. Please tell me that no one actually died there. Does anyone know the background of that “offering”?
