ParticipantSaw on Twitter claims that bystanders said the driver was doing 70MPH when they blew a red light and hit the cyclist. Stayed on the scene, so that should be maybe a $100 fine.

ParticipantIt was a stolen van, and now a murder charge it appears. So incredibly sad

ParticipantSadly the cyclist was Dave Salovesh who many of us know very well.

I have no words. This is horrible.
And I have a bike ride to lead in the morning. Feeling very vulnerable…

ParticipantFor many of us in the DC bike community, this was the last straw. Dave was a tireless advocate and a good friend. Local advocates have been begging for a road diet exactly where he was killed for years and DC has done nothing. My friends from outside of the bike community think that I’m the biggest bike advocate who could exist, but Dave inspired me to do more. I am so sad and so angry that he’s gone, and I will not let the city brush him away with condolences and a couple of plastic bollards. I hope you all will join me and the other advocates who are leading the charge in demanding a real commitment to Vision Zero

ParticipantAnd for those not on the Twitter – if anyone has any stories (100-200 words?) or pictures of Dave that you’d like to share, please send them to SaloveshStories @ gmail.

ParticipantI never met Dave, but rootchopper’s [URL=”http://https://rootchopper.com/2019/04/19/sad-beyond-belief/”%5Daccount%5B/URL%5D of how Dave fought for U-turn barriers on Pennsylvania Avenue moved me to tears. I bike on the Pennsylvania Avenue cycletrack regularly, and I will always be grateful to Dave and the others who worked to make that street safer.
On the way back from the ghost bike installation today, I witnessed the following scene, which seemed like a fitting tribute to Dave:
Scene: a family walking across Pennsylvania Avenue at 13th Street, clearly visiting from out of town. Man, gesturing: “That’s nice. Bike lanes. I like that.”
Roll in peace, Dave.

ParticipantI didn’t get to know Dave, but I did follow him on twitter. Through his efforts and from many of you I’ve learned a lot about bicycling advocacy, how difficult it can be to get enforcement, and generally how to make cycling in a city safer. Aside from a couple of complaints here or there I can’t say that I have spoken up on these things to any of the local jurisdictions, but I’m sure as hell going to make more of an effort. I figure the least I can do is actually stop for 5 seconds to take a picture of the driver parked in a bike lane and send to the jurisdiction who should care instead of just going around etc..
Did he also have a presence on this forum?
