ParticipantMidday ride from DC -> Alexandria was uneventful. The 14th St. bridge is plowed (I rode behind the machine and gave the guy a thumbs up at MVT), and MVT had nice squeaky snow ~1″ deep. Potomac Yard Trail was a bit dicier with packed rough patches, but was salted and clear between Braddock & Old Town Metro.

ParticipantThere is something wrong with this picture. It looks like the Arlington snow clearing crew went nuts and continued from the 4 Mile Run Trail on up the Mt. Vernon Trail. I’ve never before seen this section cleared. I had to turn south to find the snow covered trails I was seeking. The snow ran out at the rail crossing at Canal Center where it looks like the Alexandria snow clearing crews were busy beavers. Thankfully not all the secondary roads in Alexandria have been cleared yet.

Continuing my mission to spam the world with MBT updates (Facebook is next!): it’s rideable but not ideal. Semi-cleared on the 1st street cycletrack, slick but not rutted between M and R, and semi-cleared from R to Franklin.

ParticipantI did the Arlington loop this morning. The Custis trail was clear from Key Bridge all the way to where it met the W&OD. The W&OD looked clear towards Falls Church from there but going the other direction it had not been cleared. Once you get to Shirlington onto the 4 mile run then it is clear all the way to the Mt Vernon trail. Then on the Mt Vernon trail itself it is pretty spotty. Took the 14th St bridge and it was clear there.
Some photos of the Custis trail to where it meets the W&OD.

Not surprising based on yesterday’s conditions: the trail from Franklin to R is wet but fine (the transition from 8th is still a little sketchy). From R to M is mostly ok, except for a bit of ice by the NY Ave bridge and going over Florida. M from the MBT to 1st is slushy/icy in spots, but the 1st cycletrack is mostly clear.

ParticipantSome photos of the W&OD, Mt Vernon trail by the airport, and 14th St Bridge. Saw quite a few cyclists cruising along the Mt Vernon trail despite it being patchy.

Yes. As I instructed CBGAnimal last night on the WOD, these sort of conditions are totally rideable on any tires at normal speeds. Have fun.

ParticipantThe CCT was clear this morning, aside from a dog walker holding a cell phone to her ear with one hand, and the other holding a dog leash stretched out totally across the trail, and a deer that decided running up the trail beat crossing it. Nothing a brief stop and shout of warning (to the deer, not the dog walker) couldn’t solve.

ParticipantART was largely clear from Capital St to Rt 50, except the slush pond at the National Parks Pavilion. North of Rt 50, there are a number of significant ice patches, some in the middle of turns. The path near RFK also had a couple of large ice patches.

ParticipantThe W&OD at mile 8.0 was rideable as of 15 minutes ago on my Bike Friday with 20″ x 1.75″ Schwalbe Marathon tires on it. That said, I only saw XC skiers and tracks from a fat bike. Enjoy the snow!
