    Pretty sure I know the answer to this, but it’s fun to talk about anyway.

    I got a new rear tire for the longtail the other day. It didn’t feel as sturdy as the old one, but the old one was a few miles away from catastrophic failure. It had a good run. And I know I’m getting close to the weight limit on the Xtracycle.

    But this new tire feels like it’s flat all the time. It’s pumped up to the recommended pressure. I got a weird flat this morning from the inside of the tube. The guys at the Bike Rack thought it might be a sharp spot on the tape but never really found anything. But now I’m thinking it might be some kind of weird pinch because there’s too much weight on the bike. The tire kind of rolls laterally in a way that tires aren’t really supposed to roll.

    Anyway, recommendations on a 20″ tire that can take a load that can only be described as ill-advised?

    What do you have on now? I’d probably pick a schwalbe marathon pro as the most bombproof, and they can be pumped to crazy high pressures. (They also ride like bricks.)

    I say, just keep getting a flat every day and use it as an argument with the wife for that triple from craigslist.

    I had a Schwalbe Big Apple Plus before, this is a Big Ben.

    Schwalbe seems to think that providing information to compare their tires via their website is not a thing that should be done

    What about the rim and tire width? I have a short wheelbase cargo bike that has Big Ben (race guard?) 50mm and I’ve never had an issue. One of the rims on my bike is 19mm wide and the other is wider (more of a cargo bike/tandem rim) –don’t ask I got a good deal on a 8 speed internal hub wheel. The tire looks much more settled on the wider rim but I’ve never had any issues like you describe. I would definitely take the tube and tire off again and feel/inspect the inside of the rim and rim tape.

    Hmm. They don’t pump as high as the marathon pro’s, but they’re wider–if you can fit something that wide, it’s probably a better choice than a narrower tire at higher pressure. I wouldn’t expect that much difference between the big ben & the big apple, but it is 45g/10% heavier and maybe the extra rubber is enough to deaden them a bit? The main factors in how much weight a tire can carry is how wide it is & how much air is in it–if it’s the same size as the old tire & it’s pumped to the same pressure, it shouldn’t handle significantly less weight. The big ben did have more size options than the big apple–are these actually the same width, or wider? (If wider, it may be that they’re too wide for the rims, which can lead to a light-bulb-shaped profile that can feel wobbly like you described.)
