I’ve lived as regular cyclist within a block of Walter Reed (WR) for over 10 years and I fail to see what the big improvement is with this expense. What am I missing? You can already cross WR at the light. I cross WR on foot several nights a week after 9pm and driver stoppage in those crosswalks is better than at most, in my opinion.
Personally, I think a better improvement would be to quit requiring pedestrian actuation at the traffic lights at Pike/WR and Pike/Barton which both see heavy pedestrian usage. I went to 5 meetings about this and talked to Katie Cristol and several Arlington staff and have officially given up. See County response below. Maybe the policy will be changed in the future.
Another improvement would be to have occasional police enforcement and police on bikes. They would discover people who don’t yield to those in the crosswalk, those who pass too closely, those who hang out in the bike lane on WR, and those who beep at cyclists waiting in the right lane to go straight/north on WR at the Pike which blocks drivers who want to turn right on red. At an average salary of $58K, plus 30% benefits and I’ll add $40K a year to maintain the car and another $40K for supervision, maybe we could get two police providing 10 hours per week of enforcement. According to my numbers above, that would cost $77K per year.

Verified Official 2 months ago The pedestrian signals crossing Columbia Pike in this request (@Barton, @Walter Reed) will remain actuated (push button activation) for the time being as it is the current policy of the County to implement actuation for pedestrian phases crossing major roads with the exception of CBD areas such as Rosslyn. However, the County is updating its automatic pedestrian signal policy and once it has completed this process it will re-evaluate the automatic signals at specific intersections.
