What: Ride to the Maryland Renaissance Festival.
When and where: Saturday, September 30. Meet at 8:00 a.m. at Best Buns in Shirlington for optional pre-ride coffee, roll out at 8:30 a.m.
Route: It’s about 46 miles to the festival grounds. http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/1764218747. After the festival, we’ll bike about 10 miles to the Odenton MARC station and take the MARC back to Union Station in D.C. http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/1786395764.

    Frequently asked questions:

Q: How fast will the group be riding?
A: Social pace, about 13-15 mph. The route will be a mix of streets and trails, with some rolling hills.

Q: I live in Maryland and don’t want to ride all the way to Virginia for the ride start. Can I meet you along the way?
A: Sure. PM me, and I’ll give you an estimate for when we’ll get to the ART.

Q: How much are festival tickets?
A: Tickets are $25, online or at the gate. Buying online allows you to skip the ticket window lines.

    Q: What should I bring?
A: Lights, a lock, comfortable shoes for walking around in, and cash for food, beverages, and games at the festival.

    Q: Should I wear a costume?
A: Costumes are optional but encouraged! September 30 will be Pirate Weekend, in case you have a pirate costume handy. Costumes are also available for rent at the festival.

Q: What if I want to come for the ride but not the festival?
A: You can either take the same route back or make your own way to the Odenton MARC station.

Q: What if the weather is bad?
A: The tentative rain date is Saturday, October 21.

    Q: Will there be jousting?
A: Maybe, if you ask Judd nicely enough! It’s not part of the official entertainment, though. But don’t worry, there’ll be plenty to see and do — juggling, stage combat, puppets, archers, musicians, sword swallowers, and much more.

Oh man! I wish I could come but I already have that day booked up.

I hope we can try to do this next year too! I hear that the Maryland Renn Fest is among the best in the country and I’ve yet to attend.

Sounds like a fun outing! I might join you for the ride out, and then attempt to navigate back to DC on bike.

I have been beefing up my pirate costume. It’s gonna look good!

    (Still need a parrot, tho)

The forecast is calling for windy but otherwise pleasant weather, so this ride is a go! The festival organizers encourage people to buy tickets online in advance, because tickets for these last weekends often sell out. I’ve already bought mine.

    Got my ticket!

I’m glad I bought it ahead of time…that has got to be one of the slowest websites I’ve been on in awhile.

We had an awesome good time on Saturday. A million thanks to komorebi for organizing everything. Glorious weather included. Here are some pictures

Mr. Happy and I got into the spirit of Pirate weekend at the Renaissance Festival

Riders included: Komorebi, Emm, CBGAnimal, Judd (way in the back), me and Fast Friendly Guy. MrTinDC also rode with us for the first 20 miles or so.

The amazing Sarah Bee (and her mom) surprised us at Hyattsville with a fantastic spread: coffee, muffins, fruit, water, trail mix…..And just a week off her surgery! She rocks!

About 3 miles (!) out from the Festival we hit the end of the traffic jam trying to get in. Here Komo and Emm pull us past ’em all.

We rode to Odenton and caught the MARC train Bike Car back to Union Station. Had enough time to grab some food at a local bbq place before getting on the train.

I think my fav of all the pics is you guys breezing past the car line-up. Of course, Mr. Happy in costume is a close second.
