I’m finally retiring my commuter tank, a 2009 56cm Jamis bosanova touring bike. It’s in pretty rough shape. According to my Strava it has over 26,000 miles on it, but I was commuting on it well before I started logging miles, so it probably has over 40k miles at least. The rear rack actually has notches in the aluminum from wear.

Brakes are OK, not great. Shifting is OK, not great. I’d rather give it away to someone who needs it as a whole bike rather than send it to the boneyard. The ride quality is actually quite good despite the wear. It’s a heavy bike, so best suited for a heavy person like me.

Has original derailleurs (3×9 Tiagra, but granny gear is locked out so it’s really a 2×9) and shifters (I think) but pretty much all all other parts are replacement. Wheels are (old) Mavic disc mtb wheels (hubs still OK I think). Tires are Schwalbe Marathon Plus Tour, and they probably have 15k miles on them at least, but they don’t seem very worn and continue to grip great. It’s probably on its third or fourth bottom bracket and I know it’s on its third brake set (mechanical disk).

The only new parts on the bike are the Brooks saddle (not very well broken in) and the seat post (non kickback, which suits my weirdly ass-forward position preference).

If anybody needs this bike for daily use, let me know by PM. I’ll check back in a few days. -Jeff

How tall are you/would someone need to be to ride this? There are regular postings on the Women & Bikes FB group from folks who need bikes or have friends who need bikes.

According to the internets, a 56 cm frame is appropriate for someone 5’6″ to 5’11”. I always recommend peeps use some sort of calculator like this: https://www.competitivecyclist.com/Store/catalog/fitCalculatorBike.jsp#measures to get a better idea of frame size. I ride a much smaller frame than the internet and every bicycle salesperson suggests that I should. The calculator nailed the frame size for what actually feels right when I’m on a bike.

Hard to imagine someone 5’6″ fitting comfortably on a 56 (the Bosanova appears to have a 560mm effective top tube) but I’ve seen some weird combos where people claimed to be 100% comfortable. I’m 5’10” with shoes on and ride 54s and 55s. 55s (so like 550-555 ETT) tend to be bigger than ideal, but 53s I’ve ridden were cramped. A size 54 with a 545mm ETT really is my sweet spot, but I can go up or down a bit and still be comfortable.

If one of the people you know does claim it and can’t do the work themselves/can’t afford it/doesn’t want to pay a shop to make fit adjustments or tune this up, I’m happy to offer up my tools/workspace/mediocre mechanic skills.

I would say like 5″9′ – 5’11” is about right, but sometimes it depends a lot on leg length more than over all height. This bike rides fairly big so I can see somebody 6′ being more comfortable and in control, but below 5’8″ not a chance unless you have super long legs.
