Um, what? I don’t really see how the conclusions match the premise. They give reasons why men ride that aren’t tied to a mid-life crisis. Okay sure, MAMILs (ugh) aren’t motivated by a mid-life crisis. But the reasons they list as motivators for men say nothing about *why* “men…dominate cycling,” other than the assumption that women and non-middle-aged men just haven’t realized these things yet (??). Also, “middle-aged men in Lycra dominate cycling” is just really bad writing and doesn’t mean what they think it means.

I’m an “alone but connected” cyclist.

They think things like “an opportunity to get away from the concerns and worries of their lives back at home” are unrelated to doing it “primarily to relive their youth”? It seems to me the part of their youth that most men most miss is not having concerns and worries about their life at home.

Eh, I worried plenty when I was young. I should have gotten into cycling then.

What the heck is countryside? I prefer to think of my riding as a full-life crisis.

The article failed to address the aspect of “women would do this too, but are expected to keep house and take care of the children”.

“women would do this too, if they weren’t too busy jogging.”

Haven’t done any googling to corroborate, but anecdotally there is a disproportionate number of female runners.

And they fail to address it in like the most sexist way possible. “Men just want to escape!” Yeah, which they oftentimes do at their wives’ expense.

My wife used to nag me to get more exercise.

    Not any more.

My wife used to nag me to spend more time with friends.

    Not any more.

    :)
