Orange barrels (or whatever those oversized cones are called) and yellow tape are now blocking the curb cut to the detour at the IOD. One can use the curb cut at the corner to get on the sidewalk and then to the trail. Cyclists heading into DC are now quite inconvenienced (person just head of me stopped and went under). I would guess this is an attempt to make it safer for crossing so drivers can see the peds and cyclists just as they hit them during rights on red rather than seeing the fear in their eyes before being hit 20ft further down the road.

Yes, saw this this morning and it POd me a bit. I understand the reasoning, but there simply isn’t room at the curb cut currently for the volume of foot and cycle traffic, what with the light pole and barrels and detour signs.

Alexandria at Royal and Cameron (or maybe it was Queen?) yesterday they ground up a couple inches of the road for paving.

Watch the lip and groovy pavement there. Especially if its still in progress tomorrow with rain in the forecast.

(Alexandria, VA) – Sanger Ave between Van Dorn St and Beauregard St is undergoing road construction. The normally 2 lane road (1 lane on each side used for parking during non-rush hour times) has been narrowed down to 1 lane in each direction in one section. This is important because this portion of Sanger Ave is currently also being used for the Holmes Run Trail detour. Here is the section on Google Maps: https://goo.gl/maps/4bdEmixNz9k

(Pentagon City/Crystal City, VA) – The southbound Eads St protected bike lane is still being finished between 12th St S and 13th St S. The lines have been painted, but since the flexposts have not been installed, cars are (surprise, surprise) parking in the bike lane. This is likely to be resolved in a few days, as every protected bike lane installation I’ve seen has had this occur (cars parking in the bike lane until flexposts are installed).

I wonder when they’ll stop parking ART buses at the south end of Eads across from the bus depot? Considering it’s Arlington Co poaching their own bike lanes, it’s especially annoying.

Jeez. Went the long way around for HDCC so did not run this gauntlet this morning. This strikes me as the exact opposite of what should be done here. The major curb cut should be open and the smaller one at the corner closed. Then park a sturdy sign in the right turn lane warning right-turning drivers to beware of cyclists and peds at the new crosswalk (e.g., “New Traffic Pattern”). Forcing drivers to maneuver around (or through, I guess) the sign should slow them a bit.

Word is that they’ll stop when the new ART facility is built.

There is a tree down on the Custis between Jefferson and Harrison St (VDOT tree, damaging fence too). Was hard to get around (not over!) at 6:45pm. Fairfax Drive is a good alternate (and easy detour – off at Jefferson and on again at Harrison (or vice versa) all along Fairfax).

I e-mailed trails@arlingtonva.us about it, so likely it will be cleared out during Friday, but tomorrow morning’s commute it will likely still be there.

Actually, there are 2 trail access points on Fairfax Drive (the street next to the trail) that easily take you around the downed tree.

I assume these are not too heavy.

I know a guy who routinely removes cones from bike lanes and also replaced some cones to restore the temporary bike lane at the Jefferson Memorial. He doesn’t bike by the IOD much, so some other guy is going to have to fix this one.

I finally got to ride through there this am and it’s a tight squeeze past the light pole. It’s also a little confusing – I’m glad I had a red light to look at what they’d done and figure out where I needed to go.

(the mulch father down is still awesome however)

On the uphill side, there’s a sign saying “use pedestrian crosswalk” or something like that, so it’s not as confusing that way…still a mess though, as there just isn’t room for all the people who generally wait to cross there.

By blocking the big curb cut for the driveway (or whatever the detour trail is in real life), it also forces riders wanting to take the sidewalk on Key Bridge to get on the sidewalk where everyone else is waiting to cross the IOD. And this morning, the little gap east of the light pole was barrelled and roped off as well.

Isn’t this phase of the IOD detours supposed to be about over now?

There was a lane closure on Potomac Ave northbound, in front of the cinema parking lot. Hoping it’s gone now.
