    My new office has a bike room.

    • The bad news: They are charging an outrageous amount for using it. (Of course, the good part of this is that right now, I’m the only one using it, so I can leave my bike and stuff wherever I want.)
    • The good news: It is set up about as well as a bike room can be.

    Let’s start with the fact that it is indoors, in a climate-controlled room. The room is right across the hall from the gym, so I can leave stuff in the bike room while I take a shower, then come back and retrieve it. And the room can be accessed only with the badge for my office, which has to be specially coded also to use the bike room, so the general public (or even building tenants who don’t have access to the bike room) can’t get into it.

    It has individual lockers for each bike, with a door I can padlock closed. So even if someone gets into the bike room itself, they can’t steal my bike or any of the stuff on it. Plus, the locker is big enough so that I can put my biking clothes, coat, or other stuff in it. (It even has hooks for the coat.) This is a big plus, because I’m only allowed to use the lockers in the gym while I’m using the gym–I can’t leave my stuff there all day.

    There is a Fix-It Station, with a stand, a pump, and various tools.

    There is bike art on the wall.

    And there are electrical outlets, so I can charge my headlights, tail light, and helmet without having to remove them from the bike. (Once there are other people using the room and I’m using a locker instead of leaving my bike in the middle of the floor, I’ll have to use an extension cord for this, but it’s still a lot easier than stripping the bike to charge everything.)

    I’m hoping the law of supply and demand will ultimately cause the building to lower the cost, so that more people than just me will use it. But for right now, it’s nice to be King of the Bike Room.

    Wow. That is really nice. I really wish other buildings would do similar things to their bike storage rooms. The individual locker for bikes is an amazing idea.

    Well, we finally got another person using the bike room, so I had to move my bike into a locker instead of leaving it in the middle of the floor.

    However, I was able to grab one of the lockers closest to the electrical outlet, and set up a charging station so I can charge the six (!) devices on my bike requiring it without having to remove them from the bike.

    And I also got access to the elevator that goes directly from the street to the bike room, so that I no longer have to walk the bike down the ramp to the parking garage.

    Just a footnote: I particularly appreciated this room when I went to install chains on my tires before the snow (which also involved removing the back fender to allow more clearance). A lot easier to do it in a warm, well-lit room with a stand than either outside in a snowstorm, or in the cold, dark shed at home.

    Amusing sidelight to this: The building management has been showing off the bike room. So I messaged the guy in charge with a photo of what I’d done in terms of setting things up so I could charge all my devices without taking them off the bicycle. His response was, “Should we be putting electrical outlets in each of the individual lockers?” Apparently, they are determined to get this right!

    Well of course. I think this is why they do this – nice bike rooms like so KEWL on tours.

    Hopefully your answer was something along the lines of: yes, but with one or two 3-prong outlets (necessary for ebikes) and a bunch of USB ports. :-)

    If they really want to do it right, the door should have an auto-open, and there should be an option of those of us who have cargo bikes (so we can drop kids off before work).

    And the lockers shouldn’t require you to hang the bike from the wall. That’s tough enough with my heavy hybrid; I’m pretty sure you would not want to be trying to hang a cargo bike by its front wheel.
