That became the Tour DuPont. Those tours went through all the area where I learned to ride, during that era.
One of my favorite cycling memories was watching Sean Yates (known for his mad descending skillz) win a stage of the Tour DuPont on a downhill finish in Asheville North Carolina.
I’m getting old and don’t remember all the details. It may have been Tour du Pont at this time.
But one year we rode over to Hagerstown to see the end of a stage (and did a bunch of the roads that they did). And another year they had a stage that ended in Columbia, MD. In fact, we did one of the roads from that stage (Morgan/Morgan Station Rd) on today’s ride.
One year, one stage was many loops around the Pentagon and marine Corps Monument. Another year there was stage involving Rock Creek Park. The latter may have been after it became the Tour DuPont.
