Just in case your spam filters, blocked it, here is the 2017 Freezing Saddles Happy Hour reminder message that went out yesterday.

Just a reminder to everyone that Happy Hour and Team Announcements happen this week. Keep reading for answers to some Frequently Asked Questions. If you still aren’t sure about something, you can either reply to this email or post a question on the forum here http://bikearlingtonforum.com/forumdisplay.php?41-Freezing-Saddles-Winter-Riding-Competition and someone will try to answer it for you.

When do I find out what team I’m on?

Teams announcements occur at the Welcoming Happy Hour on January 10th. Information for happy hour can be found on the BikeArlington Forum at http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?11312-Freezing-Saddles-Welcome-Happy-Hour-meet-your-teammates! If you plan to attend, please reply to that post to let the organizers know.

I didn’t read that last question. When is opening Happy Hour?

Tuesday, January 10th from 6-8 p.m. at Bier Baron Tavern on 1523 22nd St NW, Washington, DC. Please bring $10 to cover facility rental and finger foods.

I don’t know anyone else in Freezing Saddles. Should I still come to Happy Hour?

Yes! Once there, follow these handy “Tips For New Players to Make Friends During Freezing Saddles.”

For new players, attending opening Happy Hour can sometimes feel intimidating or awkward. Even the most seasoned Freezing Saddles veteran was new at some point. Freezing Saddles participants are mostly the friendliest people you’ll meet. Here are a few ways to engage other participants at events:
    1. Walk up to someone and introduce yourself. Try, “Hi, I’m (whatever your name is). This is my first year doing Freezing Saddles. I’m on Team (whatever your team number is). Have you seen anyone else from Team (Whatever your team number is)?”
    2. Talk about bikes. Everyone at Happy Hour or other events rides a bike. You ride a bike. It’s a match made in heaven. Try things like, “What kind of bike do you ride?” or “How long is your commute?”
    3. Talk about Freezing Saddles itself. Try, “Have you ever done this before?” or “What place did you come in last year?”
    4. Find Judd or Amy. Buy us beer. We’ll be happy to talk to you and introduce you to other players in exchange.

Oh no! I can’t make it to Happy Hour to find out my team assignment. What should I do?

Don’t worry! Teams assignments will be posted on the forum later that night, or the next morning. Follow this link http://bikearlingtonforum.com/forumdisplay.php?41-Freezing-Saddles-Winter-Riding-Competition and look for a new post announcing team assignments (probably titled “Team Assignments” or something very similar).

Great! I know what team I’m on! How do I join my team?

Every team will create a new Strava club, similar to the one you’ve already joined here https://www.strava.com/clubs/freezingsaddles2017 . Your team captain or other veteran player on your team will create this new Strava club and a post on the forum announcing it. Follow this link http://bikearlingtonforum.com/forumdisplay.php?41-Freezing-Saddles-Winter-Riding-Competition and look for a new post with your team’s number in the title. This will probably include some introductions from team members and the link to the Strava club you need to join.

I was a late registrant and wasn’t assigned to a team. Am I out of luck?

Maybe, maybe not. There are usually a few people who sign up and then can’t or don’t play. After a few days, late registrants may be assigned to replace drop-outs and no-shows and even up the teams. Just be patient and if a spot is available, someone will be in touch with you about getting you on a team.

Oh no! I will be somewhere without internet access this week. I won’t be able to join my team right away, but don’t want to lose my spot to one of those late registrants! What should I do?

No problem! Just reply to this email letting us know who you are and when you’ll be able to join up. We’ll let your team captain and the Team Assignment Czarina know so they don’t replace you before you get back.

I’ve successfully joined my team. How do I keep track of how we’re doing?

Bookmark the Freezing Saddles Team Leaderboard located at this link http://freezingsaddles.com/leaderboard/team_text . (Main page here http://freezingsaddles.com/). Once the new teams have been created on Strava, it will be updated to show all the new teams in ranked order. Refresh obsessively to keep up with the latest score and stalk your friends and frenemies. If you haven’t done so already, poke around on some of the other graphs, charts, and (team and individual) leaderboards on that site to look at all sorts of cool data and riding metrics.

Remind me of the rules of this thing again?

You earn 10 points every day that you ride your bike for at least a mile, and one point for every mile you ride. The team with the most points at the end of the winter wins. Trainer rides do not count: please mark them as such in Strava or include #NOBAFS in your ride title so the leaderboard knows not to assign points for them. Please read the rules and an explanation of how the leaderboard works located at this link http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?9384-Freezing-Saddles-Important-Information.
