One of my default routes. Today I was checking the snow cover on some of the trils before tomorrow’s ride up Großer Feldberg, the highest point in the Taunus Mountains at 878 meters.

I finally got the big climb in this area done. I started by taking the U3 U-Bahn from Dornbusch to the end of the line at Oberursel-Hohemark. Then rode the Pugsley on forest roads up to Saalburg and Sanplacken. For the last 2.5 miles and 700 feet of climbing I took the paved road since the trail got a little steep and was a lot more churned up (brown sugar consistency in many places).

I had originally planned to go down the mountain to Falkenstein on the trails, but they looked steeper than what I came up (so was the road) and people were sledding on the trails. So I headed back down the way I came, but took a different trail once I got off the road.

A plaque at Sandplacken. After this the forest road/trail had been used for cross-country skiing and was well packed.
Trail closed for logging/forest management. I only had to back up about 100 feet to take an alternate trail.

We’re having winter this week in Frankfurt with highs barely reaching freezing, but no snow. I was coming home around sunset this evening along the Nidda River looking towards the Taunus Mountains.

Another chilly but sunny day in Frankfurt and I headed back to the confluence after class and lunch with the RSC group.
