    I watched as a southeast bound rider went down on the boardwalk section of the Mount Vernon Trail under the TR Bridge this morning. He skidded for no reason that I could discern, went down in a flash, and popped back up. Said he was okay. Sounded more annooyed than hurt. My rear wheel started to go as I slowed to avoid him. I stayed upright. This wasn’t even on a curve. The darn bridge is a menace!

    Yes, Trollheim was extra slimy today. Felt like the little buggers were pushing at my wheels from the sides. I saw a man carrying his bike off the Trollheim with a tacoed rear wheel this morning. Asked if he was OK, and he replied in the affirmative in a disgusted sort of way. The paint makes no difference whatsoever.

    I get passed ALL the time on trollheim because I slow way down and usually refuse to pass peds or joggers (I’m only on it til the TR bridge bail out).

    Suckers.

    How do all you folks manage to fall and not break something?! Definitely a skill I must learn.

    Looked really slick when I went through this morning. I wonder if it’s humidity related. My glasses were instantly fogging up when I stopped to take pictures this morning.

    I think mostly we manage not to fall. The skill is in applying forces (accelerating, braking, turning) as gently as possible, and sensing when friction is about to be lost.

    In my experience, condensation makes surfaces more slippery than rain somehow. My last bad crash was several years ago on a warm humid morning in April. I went down almost (breaking my hand) on one of the granite curb cuts around the Jefferson as I turned at about 2 mph to cross Ohio Drive. The curb cuts and other random surfaces were wet from condensation, but the curb cuts seemed especially slick as was the Trollheim this morning.

    Those curb cuts can be deceptively slick. Got my bell rung after losing the front on one of them a few years ago. Definitely approach them more carefully now.

    When you sense you are falling you tuck yourself in so that you fall on the big parts of your body – shoulders, hips – and don’t extend your arms or legs, which are much more susceptible to breaking.

    I must be susceptible to sticking my arm out since I’ve broken my wrist and a thumb on two different occasions from bike falls. Sigh.

    Went really slow going North bound through trollheim this morning and allowed myself at least 20ft from a cyclist that was ahead of me. Shook my head to a speedy cyclist that was going South bound at the start of the bridge. There should be signs that this is actually a skating rink when it is wet.
