ParticipantSorry about your injury and hope you feel better soon.
About the Navy Yard (IE the Navy Yard proper, including this stretch, not the whole neighborhood called Navy Yard) – yes, AFAICT riding bikes is banned there. IIUC the base commandant was struck (or had a relative struck) by a bike some time ago (not there) and is negative about biking. I consider this unfortunate – while during the day on nice days the crowds of pedestrians make this a questionable place to ride at more than walking speed, during inclement weather, in the evening, etc there are few pedestrians – and the nearest alternate, M Street, is a deterrent to less confident riders. Personally I tend to use L Street to go east-west in this area, but if you are trying to access the other parts of the ART, that is not the logical way to go.

ParticipantEek, I am terrified by grooves. So sorry. I understand your dilemma on the reporting…wish I had an answer. It bugs me that the anti-biking Navy Yard personnel can relinquish responsibility simply by putting up their “no biking” signs. In a completely different context, it brings to mind what the cig companies tried to do with their health warnings (Got cancer? Told you so!)
Erg. Will contemplate….
Heal fast, in any case. Hope you get good news from the ortho!! w&wJuly 6, 2016 at 11:34 pm #1054870rcannon100

Ha! Right now I can’t put any weight on my palm without significant pain so I think I’ll stick to the boring treadmill for a while and more sedate stationary biking. I need to figure out if I want to continue biking. I’ve had three significant injuries associated with biking in four years. My batting average isn’t so good

ParticipantThose are very dangerous grooves (wide). I’ve almost lost it there, warn others when I ride with a group there, should have posted a warning here! Sorry!

No no no. Don’t say that stuff. I was literally just looking at your tracks on Strava with complete envy and loathing. Last Sunday, okay two Sunday’s ago, all I could manage was 25 miles. And now I am relegated to Zwift. We can go on coffee rides on the island of misfit cyclists.

Two words: recumbent trike.

Are you injured too? Why are you relegated to Zwift???

ParticipantI hope you won’t feel like you have to stop riding, but everyone has to make their own decisions about what they’re comfortable with. Everyone falls, but not everyone is injured when it happens.
I’ve almost wiped out because of grooves on the lower Custis before. I know they’re there and usually cross them with a good angle, but if you go through there every day, odds are you’ll screw up eventually.

ParticipantBad news: I broke my radius bone next to the wrist.
Bad news: It still hurts.
Bad news: I have to take metro thru the end of August.
Good news: I don’t need surgery!
Good news: I don’t have to wear a fiberglass cast!
I get to wear a fancy schmantzy Boa technology removable cast that was heat customized to my arm. It is made by Exos and is infinitely more comfortable than fiberglass. I cannot remove it for two weeks, after that I can remove it briefly to shower and wash my hands. It can be tightened and loosened as needed. If all goes well, I get to remove the cast in six weeks.
Bad news: The cast only comes in one color: black. I kinda would have liked rhinestones. A gal has got to have her bling!
Overall, I got a lucky break.

Yeah, but I’m a cyborg now! Plus I can play baseball without a bat. And I’m learning how to be ambidextrous. Gotta look on the bright side.
