Why do I keep running into these?

I was almost home riding along the Holmes Run Trail to the Beatley Bridge when I came upon a young woman sitting on the trail with her bicycle off to the side, crying. There was a couple and their baby nearby, the lady shaken up by what had happened. The woman on the bicycle was riding along the trail when the couple stepped out suddenly and she grabbed a fistful of both brakes resulting in an OTB. This resulted in a chipped tooth and some scratches on her arm. I helped her get the chain back on her bike, ensured it was still functional, helped her collect herself, and meet a friend who was going to pick her up.

The couple seemed OK aside from being shaken up however it is a reminder for everyone to be mindful on our multi use trails.

After the precedent that was set in Roanoke last year, pedestrians can be held liable for accidents like these. I hope the woman on the bike is okay, but if not, I hope she got their contact information. They may owe her some money for dental bills. :(

(I am also making the assumption that the woman on the bike was riding safely and at a reasonable speed.)

Where exactly did it occur? I know that just north of the Duke St underpass is a T intersection where people continuing on the trail would have to make a 90 degree turn. Going straight would lead to the Duke St sidewalk which gets a moderate amount of pedestrian traffic. Also, at that time of day with such nice weather, that section of the Holmes Run Trail gets a lot of pedestrian traffic, so the potential for ped-bike conflict is greatly increased (it doesn’t rise to the levels of the MVT, though).

FYI this is the area being described: https://goo.gl/maps/9i2fJeU1Rry

I hope she’s okay. Thank you for stopping to help everyone out.

When you exit from the Duke Street underpass and continue on the trail towards the Beatley Bridge, you come across a bench on the right hand side of the trail. That’s where I encountered the couple and young woman shortly after the incident.
