ParticipantCan’t they at least connect those bikes to the drivetrain?

All the advantages of the ELF (except for the flexibility that transit lacks) but with double the dorkiness. But also sociable – you know you won’t be the only dork.
Also you don’t need to have your own bike around – so it is more like bikeshare – which are less pleasant for riding in traffic (because slower and less maneuverable, I guess)

ParticipantThe office fitness center where I work has an “Office Workout Challenge”: office-by-office teams, points for each workout, more points for special activities (especially those that earn the management company more $$), etc. They don’t count my commutes, but I stretch and do some other exercises after my morning ride so I get points for my team. Today, I did the “triathlon” for bonus points: rowing machine, exercise bike, and treadmill. The sheer awfulness of it reminded me why I jumped in to Freezing Saddles this year instead of doing indoor aerobic workouts in the winter.
Spin class in a bus. This means you have a group of (potential) bike riders all going to the same place at the same time. Can anyone say “peloton?”
“Why??” indeed.

ParticipantOK, this seems really stupid, but the idea of exercising while commuting by bus or train is not SO crazy. There are many people who ride commuter buses or trains for an hour or more each way. That means between work and commuting, most likely they have no time to exercise. Wouldn’t it be great if they could use that wasted time for exercise? I am able to use my bike commute for that purpose, but that’s because I live close enough to do that. It would be awesome if you could fit more people on it and use the pedaling to power it!

Hear, hear!
They’d better have a top-notch HVAC system, though.

ParticipantWhen I lived in MA I commuted 50 miles each way to work via car and trail and I can tell you that it was brutal, esp in the winter which often added another hour to the commute. I definitely would have been interested in this service as a way to get in a workout in during “dead” time plus it would have been a great way to wake up in the morning. Unfortunately one needs to have access to shower facilities at work if you’re gonna use it in the morning.
I would have loved to be able to take the train in the morning then the bike bus home.
Similarly, I’ve always been perplexed that most large airports don’t have pay-by-the-hour gyms for people with extended layovers.
