Ok, since I couldn’t make the Happy Hour at the very last minute I’m announcing my prize winners here. During Freezing Saddles I was in Antarctica with the Coast Guard on Operation Deep Freeze enduring the extreme cold, wind, 24hour sunshine and boredom of Antarctic summer, while you all were riding through the cold, darkness of winter here. So since I couldn’t participate in Freezing Saddles I figured I could at least offer a couple of cold related prizes.
1) The overall coldest ride prize.
With a 1.7 mile ride at 1F on January 2nd, the winner is…. from Team Thundercats….. Emma W! Ride title – I think I’ll put on my studded tires AFTER I eat it. I’ll be lazy as long as possible.Your prize is a US Coast Guard Operation Deep Freeze patch 2015 – sorry, the 2016 patches aren’t out yet.

For this prize I looked locally for the day with the coldest high temperature. According to Weather Underground DCA and IAD showed that the coldest day was February 14th. So this prize is for the person who left their sweetheart at home and braved the cold for a long ride when they could have been warm and toasty at home. With a 65.4 mile ride on a day where the high temperature didn’t crack 25F….. from Team 5 Just-Ice League…….. the winner is Caleb J! Ride title – Morning ride…. lame.
It’s funny that you’re already in the Coast Guard, but your prize is a Coast Guard Operation Deep Freeze 2015 patch, AND a Scott Base (New Zealand) shot glass. Hopefully you drink too.
