ParticipantLockers generally are space efficient.
Here’s Arlington County’s recommendations: http://www.commuterpage.com/pages/special-programs/tdm-for-site-plans/bicycle-parking-standards/

ParticipantMy office just banned us from bringing our bikes into the office, so I’m looking for secure bike parking near the ballston mall. Does anyone have suggestions?
I’m looking for something more secure than a u-lock on a regular public rack, but it doesn’t have to be full-on bike cage. I see people riding out of the National Science Foundation building. That would work well for me. Does anyone have an appropriate contact for the building/garage?
Thanks in advance!

ParticipantYou can park at my house and take CABI over.
Does your building not have a paid garage? There are several paid garages in the area. Any of them have racks? Best is restricted access garage – but even a paid garage is better than on the street.
There are bike lockers at Virginia Square. (Not sure where your office is)
Isn’t that Tim’s ‘hood?
What about the hotels? Downtown in the past we did not have facilities; thus management made a deal with local hotels. For a very fair price, got access to the hotel showers and hotel parking garage.

Maybe ask VAtoDC what his office plans to do with the lockers they’re getting rid of? If they’re in good order, it seems like someone should be able to re-use them somewhere!

That’s a good thought, Arlingtonrider. But the old steel lockers are in bad shape and are pretty rusted out. There’s enough rust flaking off that I can see daylight all along the bottom of the one that I use. I don’t know how soon these will get replaced, but I’m hoping that mine holds up at least that long! I’m guessing these lockers will go to a recycler.

That sucks. Just banned without providing any help with finding other options?
Why, by the way?
Also, this, which is strangely on the Fairfax County web site:
http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dpz/tysonscorner/arlingtonbicyclestoragefacilityrequirements.pdfYour building is almost certainly required to provide bike parking that meets certain requirements. So it may be worth checking with BikeArlington. They should know. Oh, wait. I see Tim already responded, although that document doesn’t address actual regulations or requirements, AFAICS.

ParticipantYou should check out the building on the corner of Glebe & Wilson. Just ride down into the garage and see what you can find. The entrance is off the alley between the building and Macy’s.

ParticipantBy this time next year there should be semi-secure bike parking at the Ballston Metro Station.

Which building is your office in? Depending on how old it is, there should be secure bike parking on-site.

Depends on when it was built/last renovated. Not a BA thing–Check with site plans: http://www.commuterpage.com/pages/special-programs/tdm-for-site-plans/site-plan-process/

ParticipantI’m in the tower that’s attached to the mall on Glebe. They are re-doing the mall and I think better parking is in the plan, so presumably my problem will go away in 2020. One of my coworkers is renting a bike locker at the VA Sq metro. It’s about a .5 mile walk from there to our building, so doable, but farther than I’d like. I’ll check out the garages around our office for something better than the mall garage.
I don’t know why they cracked down on the bikes. It’s not my company it’s the property management group.

ParticipantThe best sense I can make of this situation is that someone complained about bikes being on the elevators (I happened to be taking an elevator with my bike when another bike commuter stepped on with his bike, a rare occurrence), but it would only be correlation as the building owner sent correspondence pretty quickly after that.
The reasons I myself had been taking my bike up to my floor are that:
- in 2012, my bike was stolen from the Ballston parking garage bike rack (police report was filed)
- I have had multiple instances of vandalism with stuff being stolen off my bike including lights, tools, and even extra tubes
- there are no cameras facing the bike racks in the garage
- there are no security patrols that pass through there
- the sign right above the bike racks that reads something like ‘This parking garage is not responsible for theft/damage to any bikes at this rack’
And, to top it all off, my taillight was stolen off my bike this past Friday from those bike racks!
I wonder, does that new apartment building at Carlin Springs/Glebe have secure bike parking in its garage? I’ll look into it to see if that might be an option.

I use the freight elevator in my building with my bicycle. I figure it is harder for them to complain about me. I agree with your reasons to not park in the bike parking provided in the building (I am in Crystal City), which I had confirmed when a coworker had her deraileur bent one time down there. I just don’t trust really long term lock-up – the hour I am at the gym is about as long as I am willing to do (and their bike parking is horrible – but that would be a thread unto itself).
It might be worth asking the building why they forbid the bicycles in the office. If your office is okay with it, there should be a way to do it – your office pays them rent, so they might want to accomodate. There is likely a freight elevator that perhaps they would allow cyclists to use (ours is technically open to all – when the line for it is full of equipment, then I take the regular elevators, but that is rare).

ParticipantCould you by an old VW van, park it permanently in the Ballston parking lot, and use it as a bike locker?????
I still think you just cable your bike to Ovechkins locker. Aint nobody gonna mess with it.
