I have an injury and will not be riding for about 6- 8 weeks. I don’t want to hurt my team but cannot ride is there a way to replace me?
LIZ Willis
Sorry Liz, best wish you recover sooner.

ParticipantSorry Liz. Was wondering where you were!
Best part of having injury in winter is being ready and refreshed for the spring rides! Hopefully!

ParticipantOh no! I hope you get well soon.

ParticipantI’ve been thinking about this. I don’t think Ms. Willis has missed a National Bike Challenge or a Freezing Saddles. She first came to my attention when she was the leading woman rider from Maryland during the first National Bike Challenge. Liz, I don’t know how the others feel but I’d like you to stay on our team. We’re doing pretty well with the original roster. Let’s keep the team together!

ParticipantNo one says we can’t just add another team member, right?
Especially since our 12th place rider is also injured and out with a broken thumb (?) I think.

ParticipantMy back is messed up and I think Kel’s having knee issues. Maybe our old friend Steve Eunpu could help us out. Remember that time I tricked him into joining our NBC team by breaking my hip?

ParticipantWow, sorry to hear Team 16 is having so many injuries. Hope you all recover quickly. Maybe there are some registered riders on a waiting list for BAFS, or from the Slacker team, that could substitute. While Team 16 is still doing pretty good in the standings, if someone will be out the entire remainder of the challenge a substitute should be able to fill in as long as no more than 13 riders are not potentially adding points at the same time. We (team 11) were out 1 rider for all of Jan due to travel.

There is no one left on a waiting list. We placed all the existing ones, and stopped taking new registrations, a long time ago.

Oh well, it probably would open up a bunch of fairness and and issues from other teams with similar or different issues that prevent some riders from riding at all or up to their
normal mileage.February 5, 2016 at 10:07 am #1047226Rod Smith

Really? I haven’t seen that. I know Steve O proposed it this year, but the people in charge of team assignments decided that a) it was too complicated, and b) it wouldn’t really make things more competitive, because few care about who is last as opposed to second to last.

ParticipantYes, I do believe it’s true.

Last year, elwbikes did team assignments, and I handled late signups. Late people were first added to replace no-shows and bring all teams up to equal strength (since there weren’t magically the exact number of riders to evenly assign to teams from the start). Then I consulted with team captains about the extras; give them to last place teams, give them to teams randomly, don’t assign them to teams at all, something else. There was almost unanimous support to add them to teams and let them play. There was less consensus about how to assign them, but Rod is correct that what I actually did was put them one per team on the (4 or 5) trailing teams at that point. I think that happened near the end of January. By this time in the game, there were no “spares” in reserve last year, either.
I don’t know what method rcannon used to put late people on teams in previous years.
Liz, sorry about your injury! Hope you heal up well.

ParticipantA question for next year: Should we leave the sign-up form up indefinitely so that there will be spares for people who get sick or injured? It would be easy enough to leave the form up. However, I can see some issues with replacements.
First, what constitutes an injury? My first year, one of the highest scorers in Freezing Saddles broke his clavicle, but continued to be a high scorer. Are we looking only at people who can’t bike any more miles, or people whose miles are substantially diminished, or what?
Second, who gets picked as a replacement? Is it first come first served, do we try to find someone with a similar ride profile, or what?
Third, what do we mean by a substitute? Do we eliminate the injured person’s miles back to the beginning? If not, do we have to find some way to exclude the replacement person’s miles from before the injured person dropped out? Note that in general, we have counted all miles back to the beginning, no matter when someone gets added, but this seems like an unfair advantage if the injured person’s miles are also being counted for the first part of the competition.
