    I also vote yes.

    • If she doesn’t sign up now, she misses the chance for a whole year.
    • If she signs up now and discovers before teams are assigned that she just can’t ride at all, you or she can just send me a PM and I can delete her.
    • If she signs up now and discovers after teams are assigned that she just can’t ride at all, we’ve found ways in past years to replace people who get injured.
    • We just aren’t that competitive. The purpose of BAFS is to get people motivated to ride an amount that is reasonable for them, not to kill themselves to win. (Well, except in the case of Subby, who rode a century with a broken clavicle. But we know he’s nuts!) So if she’s not riding as many miles as she otherwise would have, it’s not a big deal. Besides, given the handicapping system, riding less than usual would give her team an advantage for BAFS 2017!

Sending healing wishes to your wife. Hope she is back on the bike soon….though I know the docs generally say not to ride until ‘the boot’ is off…we’ve been there too (as one of a smorgasbord of gymnastics injuries).
We look forward to her joining us. w&w

Just in case perhaps you’ve forgotten:), Freezing Saddles is looooong. Even if she is off the bike all January, that just means that in February when all her teammates are getting tired of riding in the dark, windy, cold, she’ll be just getting started and all fresh and chipper and encouraging and excited to be out riding.

A broken foot is serious business. If it were me, I would let it heal up good and strong and wait for 2017. You would not want her to re-break it during a dark icy winter ride when she is not at full strength. Better safe than sorry, and all that jazz.

Good point, although she would obviously be heeding whatever advice her doctor gives her about riding.

If worst case scenario is her back on a bike by Feb 1, I say yes.

As a recent victim of a fully broken ankle (fibula) it is true that the bone will not be fully healed at the end of six weeks assuming the break is of roughly of the same caliber. I was also shocked and dismayed that so much muscle tone and flexibility was lost while in the boot so I spent the first three weeks out of the boot just relearning how to walk properly (lots of limping). The ortho told me I was okay to do whatever I felt was possible without a lot of discomfort but the physical therapist was more cautious. The biggest concern is re-injury. That said, biking was easier to do long haul than walking but falling on it again would have been very, very bad.

The answer to this is easy, and requires a decision tree, but I don’t know how to make one in a forum post, so, I’ll give it a shot in text:

    1) Will she ride more than I will?

if answer to #1 is yes: 2) Will she be on my team?

If Answer to #2 is Yes: Then, barring physician recommendation not to, YES. BAFS2016 needs more amazing riders.

For the rest of the matrix:

If 1= YES and 2= NO then: NO– Way too risky. She needs to mend until at least Apr. 1.

If 1= NO and 2= YES then: NO — Way too risky. She needs to mend until at least Apr. 1.

If 1= NO and 2 = NO then: YES! BAFS2016 will be fun and she’ll be careful, right?

Thanks for all the feedback. I’m going to encourage her to 1) sign up 2) listen to her doctor 3) listen to how she feels. If January rolls around and she’s not in a good place, I don’t expect her to do much riding. Otherwise, I think she’ll make some people a really good teammate.

Yes, and get her a trike so she won’t fall off.

FTFY. And I agree completely–except, of course, that whether she is on my team is the relevant factor.

Just went to the doctor today – she is officially cleared for all activity, including cycling. It’ll be slow going at first as she starts using some neglected muscles again, but she’s planning on going for a short ride tomorrow.
