Questionnaire for cyclists

I think this is an important question that was not asked in the correct way:
What are your preferred routes when you are bicycling?

Are you asking what routes the person currently takes or what way they would *prefer* to travel if they all choices available? It is unclear and it will muddy your results. If I prefer protected bike lanes but there are none on my route, would I check that box or not?
