To make way for the Crystal City Transitway, Arlington County plans to remove the North-bound bike lane on Crystal Drive between 15th Street and 23rd Street. The new cross section would be South-bound bike lane, south-bound car lane, two-way turn lane, north-bound car lane, transit way lane. The transit way lane would be reserved for buses and bikes during morning and evening rush (the exact hours are still being determined, but potentially 5am-10am and 3pm-8pm) all other hours it would be open for north-bound cars. This would remove north-bound direct bike access to the Crystal City Connector, Crystal City Water Park, etc.
When queried on what north-bound cyclists are supposed to do, DES tweeted bikes can use the transit lane at all times, there are plans for a NB bike lane on Clark-Bell. The area between 15th & 12th will be built as a Protected Bike Lane (CycleTrack) in a few years. The segment between 15th and 20th will be marked with sharrows within the year and the segment south of 20th has not been designed and is a little farther out in the future.
