    So saw this sign at the top of Beach drive just below Garrett Park Rd this morning. 311 said the park service was responsible, park service said the county was responsible. Called 311 back and they gave this email mcdot.director@montgomerycountymd.gov if anyone wants to leave them a comment about how unsafe people in cars are versus people on bicycles.

    Don’t worry, they’re planning another sign next week reminding drivers that they are also required to obey traffic laws.

    I’ve always been tempted to alter these signs in Rock Creek Park

    to read “Caution: Cars on Beach Drive”

    Yellow is advisory. White is mandatory. Only NPS would put up a yellow/white ambiguous hybrid sign. The correct answer is yellow. The sign should advise of the presence of bicycles.

    Unless, by putting “bicycles on Beach Dr” they’re saying that it’s mandatory for bicycles to be on Beach Drive instead of the side trail. Somehow I don’t think that’s what NPS means.

    You know, I’ve never ridden on Beach drive when it wasn’t closed off due to weekend/holiday. When cars are on it, is it heavy traffic? Or still a fairly “sharable” road? :confused:

    As expected with rush hour traffic, it’s heavier southbound in the morning and northbound in the evening. I see a number of cyclists on the road doing this commute. Fortunately, I have a reverse commute, so the traffic much less. I find it unusual to be passed by more than a dozen cars between Broad Branch Road and West Beach Drive in the morning. For the reverse in the evening, it’s a few more cars.

    I received a reply from parks. the parks police are going to start ticketing cyclists on Beach Dr. for running stop signs. No mention of ticketing cars that run stop signs. And I’m honored because apparently the only people who run the stop signs are the people on my Friday ride, so our little group has caused all these problems.

    Last weekend the sign said “…requires vehicles and cyclists to obey…”. So someone must have gotten through to them. But if they start ticketing cyclists for running stop signs and continue not ticketing drivers for speeding, passing too close, etc., I’ll be seriously ticked.
