I think CX bikes are meant to go offroad, right?

This guy has done at least one more video like this. There is also the Road Bike Party videos although Martyn Ashton managed to mess himself up something serious doing tricks.

I was just going to mention Ashton. He is now paralyzed from the waist down, or maybe from the chest down. I know he is now wheelchair-bound. Danny Macaskill also suffered a series of injuries. At one point, he said he barely rode for a year because of all the pain and broken parts. (On his body, not his bike.)

That’s why I don’t really like these types of videos as much now. Hardly seems worth it.

    He’s not always wheelchair bound!

It’s still a sad story, but it’s awesome to see someone get back on the horse and seem to be enjoying life.

Holy Cow! I sure hope there isn’t a blooper reel somewhere of these guys crashing and getting hurt making those vids. It’s more fun to imagine that there was no editing and everything was perfect.

I’m glad you guys brought up the injuries. This is the first time I’ve seen trick vids like this and its good to have a reality check on the risks…

That said, I like knowing what my crossbike could be capable of in the hands of a pro! ;)

Injuries all suffered on non road bikes. Just goes to show you that they should have been on crabon.

Google for Danny MacAskill; his videos are amazing. Yeah, it takes many times for them to land those tricks correctly. MacAskill often has blooper clips at the end of his videos.

This is why they design safety “tubs” out of crabon to protect race car drivers. The shattering of crabon dissipates a lot of energy.

Yes, Danny MacAskill has behind-the-scenes videos where you can see some of the crashes, including some pretty bad ones.

In this video, click on the pop-up bubbles to see brief behind-the-scenes clips. You can return to the main video after each one. They also show some of the crashes at the end of the main video. They don’t linger on the crashes, but you can tell that he got pretty banged up on some of those stunts.

This 2013 article covers his injuries in detail: http://www.outsideonline.com/1912091/danny-macaskill-can%E2%80%99t-ride-bike

Since turning pro, he has been off his bike more than on, sidelined with a long list of injuries that include three broken collarbones, two broken feet, a torn meniscus, a torn disc in his back, and countless sprains, strains, and lacerations—almost all of them from bike accidents. “I think I’ve been hurt, or recovering, like two-thirds of the time since the first video,” he says.

MacAskill believes that his spinal injury—a tear of the segment where the lumbar meets the sacral region—is the source of most of his troubles. His chronically sore back, and the couch time it has encouraged, has left his core weak and the rest of his body vulnerable to compounding problems. His postsurgical prognosis was favorable but arduous. MacAskill didn’t expect to be back to 100 percent for five or six months, when he hoped to start developing new tricks and, ideally, filming his next video.

I also saw a downhill bike race on TV a couple months ago. I don’t normally watch those events but I happened to come across it. During the interviews, commentaries and backstories, I learned that almost every single one of the competitors had suffered very serious injuries at some point over the past couple years, including many broken bones and potentially life-threatening crashes.

I consider those downhill races, the bike stunts and similar events as daredevil activities. If people want to do them, that’s their right. But the extreme risks of the activities definitely shouldn’t be glossed over. I guess it’s similar to popular Olympic sports like gymnastics and downhill skiing, which can also involve catastrophic injuries. (Gymnastics is one of the most dangerous sports at the elite level. It’s pretty easy to break your back on some of the events, such as the uneven bars.)
