Welcome to the Bread thread, announcing upcoming Bread Rides.

    What is a bread ride?

Think of it as a Eucharistic church service minus the church service. No sermons to sit through before you get this tasty bite. Sharing bread is a great way to build community and make new friends. These bread rides have a twist or two.

You might ask, why do a bread ride when you’re virtually guaranteed a mouthful of something delicious simply by making your way to the free sample counter at any Trader Joe’s supermarket? Although I happen to agree that TJ’s free samples totally rock, the advantage of bread rides is you’re sharing that delicious baked item with your sweaty, greasy, lovable, two-wheeled friends and friends-to-be. Hard to resist.

Here are the rules….subject to change, depending on your input.

1.Any Forum member may host a Bread Ride.

    2. The host is responsible for forking out the $$ for a loaf of bread or other baked item for everyone to share. It is fine to co-host, perhaps it’s even recommended, ‘cause then you’re guaranteed that at least one other person will show up….a bread date, of sorts. Who knows where that will lead. :+)

    3. The host gets to pick the day/time and the location…. Best Buns, DD, or some other local or far-away place that sells baked items. It is totally fine to pick the same venue more than once so long as you select a different bread or baked good to share.

    4. The times and locations should be announced on this thread. You can invite other riders too beyond the Forum. Those planning to participate are encouraged to RSVP on the thread or by PM to ensure a critical mass.

    5. The host shall select and pay for the bread or cake or other baked product to share. The host has the option of providing clues as to what bread they plan to buy. Or they can just wing it when they arrive at the venue.

    6. In lieu of purchased items, the host may supply their own bread or baked good in an appropriate venue, provided the host knows how to bake (this disqualifies some of us). Any host who chooses the bake-it-yourself option must alert potential participants in the Bread Ride announcement.

    7. Bread ride participants are of course welcome to purchase coffee, beer or whatever else is sold at the chosen venue.

    8. Those who participate in bread rides may ride to the destination together or individually. The key is to show up at the designated place at the designated time (unless you get a flat tire in which case you may be out of luck.)

    9. Post-Bread Ride documentation is strongly encouraged, in the form of bread descriptions, photographs, or other evidence. At a minimum, please report the kind of bread or other baked good that was selected.

    10. Bread rides can take place anytime anywhere so long as you can get there by bicycle….

One goal of these bread rides is to help bring more riders into our flock by offering get-togethers in a variety of times and places beyond the regularly scheduled coffee clubs. This forum lists over 1600 members. How many have you met? Everyone is encouraged to share in the bread.

Please let me know if you’d be up for participating (your schedule permitting) in some fashion, whether to partake in the bread sharing or to generously serve as a host.

    + + + + +

The inaugural Bread destination is Best Buns in Shirlington at 8 a.m. this coming Sunday May 17th.

Bread clue: The item I am buying complements nicely an award I presented at the FS happy hour.

Man, that’s pretty early for a Sunday morning.

And a long time to hang out until the blessing of the bicycles at around 11:30.

But if there are no puppies or cute kids, and you’re buyin’, maybe I’ll bleary-eye it there.

Unfortunately, I have an actual Eucharistic church service I have to attend that morning (two, actually). :p

FYI – for those of us of alternate persuasions, saying a prayer over bread is standard at any meal where bread is served (because bread is the “ikkar” – the main thing – of any meal) – and of course mandated on Friday night, Saturday midday, and the evening and midday of every holiday. And as for twists, Best Buns does make a challah, but I think only on Friday, naturally enough. ;)

Just thought I would add some to the bread nerdiness.

The bread’s on me tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. Hope you can be there — everyone’s welcome.

(And if nobody shows up I’ll bring it home to my kids :+) )

    Happy riding. w&w

I’m planning on attending. Maybe ride a century afterwards if anyone would like to join me.

Nice idea! I’ll stop by on my way to an Alexandria ride.

And thanks again, W&W, for volunteering with RCannon, Eduardo and others at the Shirlington BTWD pit stop. It was a very fun and lively pit stop, and Best Buns and other sponsors put out an amazing spread for us.

Oh no! So close and yet so far. We were so excited to see you arrive on your bike, and then we never saw you come in. I was watching for you at the main entrance, but I figured you must have slipped in the other entry. Then SteveO went outside looking for you. Darn. We stayed ‘til after 11 a.m.
We were in a booth, and height has never been my forte….

We had a King Cake (not holey but perhaps holy), which fit nicely with the Sleaze Queen.

Many thanks to Rod, komorebi, Arlingtonrider and SteveO for coming by!

Thanks for the king cake, w&w! It was great catching up with you, Arlingtonrider, and Steve O (and getting a bonus Rod Smith sighting).
