The new bikes will be made by Motivate, the operator of Capital Bikeshare and bikeshare systems in several other cities. The new bikes will be compatible with existing bike docks and stations.
The appearance is similar, but the gears will be adjusted and the seats will be improved. The new seat material will supposedly resist cracking. The new seats will have a center hole to allow for water drainage. Anyone who has ridden CaBi on a rainy day will recognize this as an improvement.

Let’s hope this speeds up the expansion process. DC, Arlington and Alexandria all plan to add new stations this year, but the process has been delayed due to equipment supply problems. Last year’s Bixi bankruptcy held up the expansion plans and delayed the start of bikeshare in College Park. Now Bixi is no longer relevant for Capital Bikeshare.
EDIT – The new bikes arriving later this year will be the final purchase from Bixi. The bikes will be largely the same as the existing ones in the CaBi system. In future expansions, I think Motivate might start to transition to the new Motivate bikes.
