Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake announced the new Mayor’s Bicycle Advisory Commission, which apparently had been inactive for some time. Baltimore may not be known as a top bike-friendly city yet, but they are making small steps toward providing transportation choice and improving safety and livability in the city.

The Charm City Bikeshare proposal has seen a few delays. Reports from last year stated that the system could be on the way by Summer 2015, but there haven’t been any updates since then.

They plan to add 100 miles of bike lanes over the next 15 years, but how much of that will actually get built is anyone’s guess. (The current mayor is not likely to be in office 15 years from now.)

Amtrak should have their new bike-compatible baggage cars on some long-distance routes this year. That can make it easier for DC-area residents to bike in Baltimore. A bikeshare system would be another good option, if they ever manage to get it started.

Another Baltimore bike story. Almost too many to count, this week.

Officials have reached an agreement with bike groups to formalize mountain bike riding around the Loch Raven Reservoir. (The land is in Baltimore County, but the City operates the reservoir and the water system for both jurisdictions.) People have been riding on off-road trails there, but were not authorized to do so. The city claimed that the riding was contributing to erosion and negative effects on water quality at the reservoir. Some areas will be opened up to legal off-road riding while the bike groups will help to close off unauthorized trails and maintain the new legal trails.

The article also mentions the planned cycletracks (bikeways) on Maryland Ave. and Mount Royal Ave. A buffered bike lane is also being added on the Roland Ave. where Thomas Palermo was killed while riding his bike, on Dec. 27. Perhaps a lot of this momentum is the result of Palermo’s death, although some of these projects were being planned already.
