BikeDC was quite successful at $40 for 24 miles of car-free riding back in 2012. I’d say you’re in the right ballpark.

I struggle to understand how Bike DC struggled with permits, when it seems like there is a marathon almost every other week impacting travel around DC and Arlington. Not sure if it is just the routes being different, or DC and the park service prioritizing marathons over bikes. I would have loved to ride on bike dc…so I hope it comes back someday

To the OP–totally depends on your target audience. Personally, I’d want a 15-30 mile ride, with a water bottle and snacks at rest stops included for $40 . If your audience is more tourists, then 10-15 miles may be your limit.

Get in touch with WABA. They have been trying to find someone to resuscitate BikeDC, but have struggled to find a competent organizer. They may be able to give you some backstory and some help and may even partner with you.

That sounds like a lot of money for 15 miles. Are you looking for something like the Five Boro tour in NYC? That’s more like 40 miles. I realize NYC is bigger than DC, but you’ll have a hard time getting a real tour of DC in only 15 miles.

Agreed it should be a bit longer, especially given that in the primo DC sections (Georgetown, Lincoln Memorial, National Mall) it’s pretty flat. But it’s within ballpark range.

We have a pretty wide range of people we want to target. From families looking for something fun to do to novice and active riders. We have a strong advocacy mission with this event so we want anyone and everyone to participate.

“Strong advocacy mission” = essential information. As a cyclist who has been riding in this area a long time, I wouldn’t pay you $40 for something I could easily do on my own (unless there was food or beer involved). But if it’s for a cause I want to support, that would be different. I’d say 15 miles at $40-$60 would be a nice way to support a cause and you’d pull in plenty of riders at different levels.

Thank you for your insight! We are focusing on bike safety and infrastructure development. Do those causes seem to match ones you are willing to support?

WABA does have spies. I cant tell you which one of us is the Mole ~ but there is a Mole amongst us. At least one.

Of course. You’ve already been introduced to http://www.waba.org/, and http://www.bikearlington.com/, not mention http://www.bikeleague.org/. Tell us more about your organization.

Re: families – $40 pp is pretty steep for a family. Also, not sure if you’re looking at an open streets type event or a rolling closure event, but families can be very slow. Can you elaborate more?
