Always glad to see posts about transportation choice on ARLnow and posts from dasgeh. But is this a regular column? The Progressive Voice has been a series of guest posts about various topics. It doesn’t indicate that this is a regular feature. In any case, good post.

    What did I just say?

More seriously, if folks here want to demonstrate that it’s a topic that deserves a lot of attention from ARLnow, go forth and engage.

I’m often relieved that, while I can read ArlNow articles, work blocks the comments. I think it’s better that way.

…Are the comments there always that stupid? I’m not familiar with that site.

    No. They’re often stupider.

It’s evidence of how many people think, and vote, unfortunately. I find it best not to ignore them completely, but not to get obsessed with them either. It helps to provide a balance to the rants, while avoiding trolls who try to drag people down into endless, name-calling personal fights. It’s not always easy, but I think it’s worth the effort. The comments used to be dominated almost completely by rabid bike (and pedestrian) haters, and “haters” would be the correct term.

It’s still a bit of a Wild West atmosphere there (the way it is with most news site comment sections), but at least there is more balance now.

There’s a reason most news sites are dumping comments.

You seem to be telling me to read the comments. Damn you, sir.

Progressive Voice is a regular column with a rotating authorship, of which I am now part. They also have guest columnists, which I did last year.

Thanks for all the kind words and well, comments.

Anonymity fosters contempt. The same anger being lobbed from the faceless realm of comments sections is the same anger drivers feel behind windshields. Very few lurkers would slither into a public forum and spew such vitriol if they could be seen. We have images of who these trolls are in our minds right- white male late 30s overweight, lacking success with the ladies, perhaps owning large collections of Japanese anime. I bet we are wrong, the average troll wants you to see them that way, so you don’t realize they Are people in your everyday life. It’s probably Nancy from the PTA or Tom whowe son is on your son’s basketball team who jumps all over every word you post online And calls you horrible names.

I find that it’s the news sites that tend to have the angriest posters (excluding extremist websites whose sole point is to attract angry extremists). Yahoo News can be pretty bad, but it depends on the article. W. Post is up and down, but there are some trolls there. (Not as much on the Capital Weather Gang posts. Those comment sections are populated by earnest weather geeks.) WJLA got rid of comment sections completely. The NY Times only allows comments on a limited number of articles. Political websites and Washington news sites have a pretty high Anger Quotient as well.

Sites like this one, where people are focused on something positive and constructive, tend not to bring in as many of the angry, hateful types, even though we do have the occasional dust-up.

Sports websites are a mixed bag. Some of them are relatively calm, especially the SB Nation “blogs,” but some of the general sports news sites bring in the angry crowd of trolls like the other news sites. It’s something about the news.
