Update from the Rockville Bike Hub

While the holidays and business or personal travel kept things moving at a slower pace over the last two months, the Board of the Rockville Bike Hub has not been idle. After incorporating in September 2014, the mission statement and by-laws were completed in November 2014. Since then we have set up a bank account, designed a logo and set up a Twitter account (@RockBikeHub). We also had a table at Stop, Swap and Save in Westminster, MD on Sunday February 8th to spread the word about our efforts to set up a community bike shop.

Here are the members of The Rockville Bike Hub board:
    Steve Andruski (President)
    Connie Bertka (Treasurer)
    Stephen Nightingale (Secretary)

Special thanks go out to Rukesh Korde who helped draft the by-laws and Joe Nicola who designed the logo.

In addition to all of this, we have been planning a number of upcoming events:

    • We plan on setting up a booth at the Rockville Farmers Market starting the last Saturday of April. We hope to be there every 2nd and 4th Saturday.
    • We will be set up at the Tour de Cookie on May 2, 2015 helping with any mechanical problems riders might have. The Tour de Cookie is a charity ride benefiting The Tree House Child Assessment Center of Montgomery County, MD (http://treehousemd.org/tour-de-cookie).
    • The Rockville Bike Hub is also taking over for Bikes for the World to fix up bikes for the TERRIFIC kid’s community service program run by the City of Rockville and will run the bike give-away at the end of the program in May 2015.
    • Plans are in the works to set up at the Carl Henn Memorial Ride being planned by the Rockville Bike Advisory Committee for September 19, 2015 to help with any mechanical problems riders might have.
    • Other ideas are being discussed, but will largely depend on volunteer help. Ideas for other projects are also welcome.

We also need to do things like set up (and maintain) a website and Facebook page, organize some crowd-funding campaigns and try to find permanent space. To get all of this started and keep all of this running, we continue to look for people interested in volunteering. The Rockville Bike Hub can only do as much as our volunteers are willing to do. We understand how difficult it can be to budget your time and commit to a project like this since everyone on the Board has a full time job too. However, our goal in starting this community bike shop is to create a sustainable resource for the cycling community in the Montgomery County area. Even if you could only commit a few hours on one of these activities, it would be greatly appreciated.

We will also need parts or bikes, consumables (like tubes), tools and eventually money to purchase these kinds of things. If you would like to help, please contact Steve Andruski at swandruski@gmail.com or 518-928-6799. Other correspondence can be mailed to:

    The Rockville Bike Hub
    PO Box 10696
    Rockville, MD 20849

Once we get a website set up, the proper State forms filed and a crowd-funding campaign started, there will be ways to donate money directly.

As President of the Board of the Rockville Bike Hub, I would like to thank those who have shown interest and support so far. This crazy project seems less crazy thanks to other crazy people willing to be involved.
