First (5) people to 100,000′ elevation get a beer on me at happy hour! If those (5) people get 200,000′ by the end, i’ll make it 2 beers each. That will be the most work anyone has ever done for two free beers, making them taste that “MORE BETTER”!

BTW, when is the final happy hour?

Thanks. I have added this to the list of Pointless Prizes. Feel free to come up with a clever title for your prize.

AFAIK a date has not yet been finalized for the final HH. Keep the entirety of the three weeks after March 19 completely and utterly clear on your calendar. Just in case.

Time to hit Coxey Brown Road once or twice or 49.45 times.

Just for the record, Strava severely understates my climbing when I upload from my Garmin Edge 200 (compared to others on the same ride and compared to the elevation displayed on the Garmin). I bought a Edge 500 that seems to yield more accurate data. I still use the 200 on weekdays though because I think it looks less interesting to thieves.

Pro tip, never click on “correct elevation”. The number will drop, a lot. For the record, ewilliams never uses the “correct elevation”. :p End of rant.

When I ride with Rockford, I always end up with more elevation, and she ends up with more miles. Same Strava app, same version of iPhone. Whatever. It all comes out in the wash.

But Rod, it’s only fair that you have to work harder, after all you ride a bike for a living! besides, my set bet, thus I’m excluded from buying myself a free beer, but somehow I’m sure I’ll manage.

Yeah because it’s so easy to rack up the vert riding in a city built on reclaimed swampland towing a seven foot long trailer.

Yeah nothing is easy about that! You da man!!!

I will say, elevation is a tricky one, and the one statistic with the most discrepancies. My 510 always reports almost spot on with RWGPS data. Over a 100 mile ride its usually within +- 100′. I’d say that’s relatively accurate. There was that one day in September when Jeff and I both gained over 1000′ in a short 5 mile ride just before a storm. Barometers????

All that said, regardless of the instrument used to calculate, 100000′ over a few months is a huge deal and one that deserves a free beer. If I could afford one for everyone who breaks 100k I would gladly provide. So Rod, you make it 150k and ill make it two! We have shared many rides where you yielded about 75% of my elevation.

PS, buy a 510, I love mine and it will last 20hours as advertised.

If I am at the 5 climbers happy hour I will be happy to cover your beer. In fact I will be happy to buy you some cases of beer before the end of FS if you will drink them rather than ride.

I was doing a climbing ride one summer day as a thunder storm rolled in, over and out. I expected to see 6 large hill cycles and 4 small ones but I got one parabolic curve of an elevation track. I was a bit ticked as it gave me a small fraction of the climb i did. Once I figured out it was the low pressure from the storm I hit correct elevation and the expected profile snapped into place.

I love climbing! And climbing challenges – I’ve done the Rapha one on Strava twice now.

Riding in a heavy downpour/storm always [adversely] affects elevation readings from my Garmin. I think it’s actually just the barometric sensor port getting waterlogged, in which case yeah “Correct Elevation” will give you something closer for your ride. But generally the altitude derived from barometric pressure is more accurate, even though it drifts easily over time (especially with temperature). The only other thing you can do I guess is make sure you’re on 1 second, not “Smart” recording on your Garmin since that may end up reducing your climbing/descending numbers. I have one of the display pages on my Garmin set up to show total climbing and descending so if I’m targeting say 2000ft on a ride I can check there (roughly – Strava will change it slightly).

The only “constructive criticism” I have of this side bet (not that I’m competing) is that it’s skewed to those who already have a lot of climbing so it effectively excludes a lot of participants already. If it was say, 50000′ from a set future date, or say, 25000′ from March 1, etc. it would be more of a level playing field (and people could prepare, etc.).

I’m good with that, I actually like that better,

I’ll create a spread sheet and document everyone’s elevation as of February 28th at some obscure time when I’m home.

The first 5 people to get an additional 20,000 feet will get One Free Beer, That’s an average of 1000′ per day
The first 5 people to get an additional 40,000 feet will get TWO Free Beers, That’s well MATH, you get it

I like the ZERO sum starting point. I Think this is as fair as it’s going to get. Twice the work twice the fun, and I would like to make it into a race with lots of people trying. Set the suffer score high

    Any suggestions beyond that?

But with the original method I had a ready-made excuse not to try.
