    Who decided we needed salt treatment on the Arlington trails? What happened to just plowing, or brushing, when it snows?

    Brining before snowfall is more cost effective than plowing after snow & ice accumulate.

    I saw that yesterday, and I was so happy. Being taken seriously as a commuting modality is huge.

    The brining worked really well, particularly under the bridges and overpasses.

    It was likely a joint decision made between Arlington DES and DPR.

    It looked like they did a careful and light treatment and did not overdo.

    You could send a nice note to the general “Contact Us” line. But some of them are looking at the forum now too…

    Thanks to Arlington County!! When I rode home last night and turned onto the Four mile run trail at the airport I was so pleased to see the brine stripes down the trail and then this AM at 6:45 the trail had already seen the plow. Great stuff.

    Thanks to everyone who helped to get this achieved.

    Now we just need the National Park Service to do the Mount Vernon Trail….

    Thanks for salting the trails last night and plowing them this morning. I rode in from Falls Church, and it made a huge difference when i caught up with the plowed section of the Custis Trail near Ballston. The ride was much quicker and felt safer. I caught up to and passed the plow at the Italian Store, and it was obvious how much the trail plowing helped, since I was immediately plunged in to two inches of snow on the trail and my speed dropped drastically along with my traction.

    Thanks again, y’all rock and I’m looking forward to a safe commute home by bike on clear trails!

    Well done. Thanks! We may consider showing thanks to the County Board (and County Manager) as well — our lobbying to get this done had to go all the way up to them, and it was their nod that made this happen.

    Sounds like it would have a horrible environmental impact on trails that run through parks and/or next to streams.

    That is something that DES and DPR are aware of and have taken into consideration when clearing trails.
