ParticipantLong live the dynamo hub (and lights)! For this reason among many others. When I had dynamo lighting, I ran it all the time. The drag not even noticeable, but I got positive comments, even in broad daylight, about how visible I was from far away.

ParticipantAny opinions on the accident rates in the paper and how they compare with local experience?

ParticipantTotally anecdotally, I feel they’ve made riding safer for me. 19% safer? Don’t know, but that feels right, gut-wise.

ParticipantI run my supernova dynamo lights all the time, and like cyclingfool, I can’t tell the difference with regard to drag. It is nice to be seen. I know when I see people with lights on in the daytime I notice them much more quickly.

ParticipantI leave my lights all the time, thanks to my Schmidt dynohub. I will have the occasional person let me know that my lights are on, but that just means they see me

ParticipantWhen I’m commuting, and very often when I’m not, I use a front white blinky light. It seems to get a lot of attention. Before, people would often look right through me, and then do something dangerous like pull right out in front of me. With the blinky, I’ve noticed people will often look at me, start to creep, then notice my light and stop because they realize that there is a real person behind that light. A moving, blinking light is unique, so it helps distinguish me from the urban landscape.

ParticipantMy B+M setup is powered by a modern sidepull dynamo (would’ve loved a dynohub, but $300 for a built-up wheel…). Ok, it costs me a gear or two of speed, but works very effectively, without the low-speed flicker that comes with the dynohubs. I’ve had occasions to run lights up during daylight- be it the Arlington Fun Ride or my rides for Papillon, the trails can get very crowded with bike AND pedestrian traffic. Every bit of visibility helps, here and on the street.
All of this is why my wife’s next bike (a Breezer Uptown 8 LS) *will* have a dynohub.

ParticipantWhen I began cycling again last summer…after many years away, I began to wonder whether or not I needed any lights. One sunny afternoon I spotted a fellow on Franconia Rd with a really bright front flasher and it immediately struck me how he popped out of the scene. Without it he would have blended into the hubbub of this busy road. I ride with lights at all times. I’ve seen enough personal evidence that they make a difference.

ParticipantI just got a B&M Lumotec Fly IQ premium light for my bike. It has crazy LED daytime running lights. I have another bike with a modern sidewall generator. It works fine but makes noise and has a little more drag than the dynohub. I can’t imagine listening to the whine of the sidewall generator all of the time. I don’t hear it when it’s raining or in traffic, I guess.
BTW.. I got the sanyo dyno mounted to a low-end-ish wheel for $25 on Ebay plus shipping. Lucky low bid, I guess. You can get new 700c with generic dynohub for for $99 shipped on Ebay, too.
Oh by the way, Green Lizard (Herndon) and Bikes@Vienna are both Peter White Cycles dealers for lights, generators, dynos and the like.

Welcome to the Euro light world. If you haven’t tried the light yet, here is what your nocturnal ride will look like:
