An underrated tune, “I Love You Goodbye” — with a strong Cajun feel

She Blinded Me with Science: https://vimeo.com/70051022
(Kind of corny, but it’s his most popular song.)

    Budapest By Blimp: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GAdK74gJe04
(A look at the decline of European imperialism, a common theme in Dolby’s work. Remember that he’s British.)

    One of Our Submarines: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OsZTJ5vfUs
(Another song about the decline of the British empire, tied into a story about a sinking submarine, inspired by an ancestor of his who served in the British Navy.)

Dolby looks like Sean Chisam (going only by the screenshot wearing the cap at the soundboard). Chisam’s a musician and a cyclist and I’ve never seen them together. Conclusion: Sean IS Thomas Dolby.

My brother in law is teaching at the peabody Conservatory and has been hanging out with Mr. Dolby as they are co-workers. I have begged him for an introduction….having a drink with him would be icing on the cake.

    “Pulp Culture”

“I drove all over Hollywood looking at the stars
First I ate my Milky Way and then I ate my Mars
But sucking on a Galaxy, I noticed something pretty bizarre
There’s not a lot of people there, just an awful lot of cars”

I met him after one of the Birchmere shows, though only briefly. It had been so long since he had been on a tour that all of the long-time fans came out of the woodwork. A couple guys at the Birchmere brought a super-sized cardboard reel-to-reel tape player, about two feet in length, with Thomas Dolby’s song titles written on it. Thomas autographed it for them.
