ParticipantSaw a bunch of construction vehicles around the intersection of South 18th Street/Crystal Drive and Crystal City-MVT Connector in Crystal City today. Northbound on Crystal Drive right lane and bike lane are both completely blocked, but I think I saw people still using the Connector.

ParticipantThe pedestrian signal stopped showing the ‘walk’ sign when the light turns green for traffic on Fairfax Dr. I’ve only noticed crosswalk buttons for crossing Fairfax Dr and always thought the ‘walk’ sign was automatic for bikes on the path. Am I missing something here? Does anyone know what changed?

Participantless delay for cars!

ParticipantI noticed this Friday evening and this morning, but attributed the lack of crossing light to the fact that no cyclists or pedestrians were at the intersection when the light changed, so maybe it did not get triggered.
Update: the walk signal was working this evening, so I think the “problem” was along the lines I outlined above.

New station for the Metroway bus rapid transit. The road entrance to those apartments will be closed permanently, which I think is moderately good for cyclists and pedestrians. (There will still be the other entrance for drivers, about 40 ft to the north.)
EDIT: One of the entrances will be closed. But I think the entrance leading into 18th St. will reopen later.

Upcoming Work
Station E – Initial work will include water line installations/relocations. Construction impacts include the following:
Crews plan to remove the trees and landscaping between the main driveway and service driveway on Saturday, Nov. 1, weather permitting, in order to proceed with water line installations/relocations. Landscaping including the replacement of the five trees will be provided with the new station.Temporary water service disruptions and/or shutoffs due to water line installations/relocations will occur in November. Shutoffs are anticipated to occur during the overnight hours and are subject to change. Affected residents will be notified in advance.
The 1801/1805 Crystal Drive driveway exit at 18th Street & Crystal Drive has been permanently closed and the current entrance has been modified to two-way use. Drivers can use the exit immediately north of the intersection to access Crystal Drive during construction (drivers can turn north or south from this exit).
***
The intersection will be safer because cyclists and pedestrians will no longer need to look for cars coming from the right side (although after passing through the intersection, they will need to watch for cars at the remaining building entrance/exit, just to the north). There is a natural tendency for people riding up from the MVT Connector to stay on the sidewalk along Crystal Drive, even when riding southbound, at least until the 18th St. intersection. When approaching the building exit while riding south, it’s not easy for drivers and cyclists to see each other because of the trees and bushes. This will no longer be a problem because that exit is now closed.
The remaining exit, just to the north, is not cluttered with trees and bushes. It’s easy to see drivers exiting there, and drivers should have a much easier time seeing cyclists or pedestrians.

ParticipantThe signal at Gallows Rd and SAIC drive (is it still called that now that SAIC is Leidos or whatever?) was a blinking yellow of death.

Participant4MRT was badly flooded this morning around 7:00am with 6-10″ deep rushing water over all the creek crossings. I managed to get through one before bailing and climbing the small escarpment up to road level. I was surprised as I didn’t think it had rained that much in the night.

ParticipantHi. Long time, no post.
Looks like a freeze overnight with wet roads/trails. What’re the chances of some ice on the W&OD in the morning? Time for studded tires?

ParticipantIt’s possible there will be ice, but I’m guessing studs will be overkill. With the wind, the trails and roads might be dry before the freeze.

ParticipantFrom 6:15am – Two trees down across the troll bridge on the MVT, also some frozen puddles along 4MR.

The troll bridge – you mean the board walk near Teddy Roosevelt Island? I didn’t see any downed trees there at about 7:10. Is it possible they were already cleared away? Nah, more likely I’m blind.

Yep, that’s the spot… and you couldn’t have missed them… I had to dismount to get under/around one of them. If you were blind you would have smacked straight into it. Crazy that it was taken care of so quickly.

ParticipantSouth of the TR bridge? I didn’t see them at 8:00, but I went over the TR bridge.

yep, just South about 50 yards, there was a bunch on branches scattered around too… I was pretty tired and it was stupid early so maybe I was still dreaming, but I certainly remember getting off my bike and thinking “holy crap this is dumb”
