ParticipantWhat is the universal hand signal for “turn off the flashers, you’re on a trail and the Sun has been up for an hour”? My left hand moving in an exaggerated patting motion does not seem to be sending a clear message.

ParticipantJust close your eyes until the flasher passes.

An upraised middle finger?
Actually, I just figure they are wasting their batteries. I doesn’t really bother me.

I usually turn off my front lights on the trail if the sun’s already up, but I don’t stop to turn off the rears, though I assume it’s the fronts you’re really talking about anyway.

Yes, the front lights. And it was just odd, that a whole series of riders were flashing this morning.
I don’t have an issue with the rear blinkies. In fact, I kind of like it when riders on the trail leave them on, so that I have an incentive to ride faster and play Ms. Pacman on my ride in.

My loud cries of “My eyes! The goggles, they do nothing!” at least serve to amuse myself, lessening the sting of their ineffectiveness at changing behavior.

ParticipantIf the sun has been up for an hour, it sounds like someone just needs a new thing to complain about.

ParticipantThe paving and other repair work has now been completed on the Fairfax portion of the Holmes Run Trail from Columbia Pike to the Chamblis Street Bridge. Trail is nice and smooth. The contractor was still working on some final touches, but all the fencing has been removed.

ParticipantAnyone else want to report “graffiti”? After figuring out the Arlington online reporting form (it seems that my browser script blocker hid the reporting tool from view before), I reported an item on a sidewalk, next to Rte. 1/Jeff. Davis Hwy at the turnoff to Crystal Drive.
Here’s the Street View on Google Maps: http://goo.gl/maps/qglhL
I believe I reported that problem a couple years ago, but it hasn’t been fixed. I reported it again today, using the online form. Crews are doing construction work on the Metroway bus lanes less than 50 ft. away, so someone should be able to fix this issue. Something like this really shouldn’t be left to stand for so long. Kind of embarrassing.
I’m guessing that the mark has gone unnoticed because there isn’t much reason for anyone to be walking up that sidewalk. It’s safer and more pleasant to use the sidewalk along Crystal Drive, or the bike trail on the east side of Crystal Drive. (That trail is currently closed because of the Metroway construction work.)
The Street View image is fairly recent. You can see the orange plastic fencing on the other side of Crystal Drive, where the Metroway bus lanes will be added. The grass is now torn up, but that didn’t happen until perhaps August or September. Here’s another picture, that I took myself this week.

Arlington is usually quick to respond to reports, but not in this case.

ParticipantThe electronic speed sign on the CCT has been removed. You can now resume going 15-ish.

I have been in a twitter discussion with @arlingtondes today. They said
@ArlingtonVA @ARLnowDOTcom @KeysToChange #ArlingtonDES staff forwarded report to @VaDOTNOVA. They maintain Rt. 1 sidewalk.
Also says, “I reported it again today [yesterday], using the online form.” Will send to staff but should be in system.
Based on the forum, it looks like it’s already been reported to staff. @ArlingtonVA

ParticipantEven more disturbing because of the location of that sidewalk, along a road named after Jefferson Davis.

I never use the flashing front light. I always keep it on low setting but the other day some dude complained about my light. Actually he nicely asked if I would PLEASE TURN IT OFF as he was passing in the other direction. No, I’m not going to turn my light off going through falls church with all of the street crossings. Sigh I guess it’s that time of year to begin complaining about lights…
