While this single operation won’t end bike theft in Arlington or the D.C. area in general, it’s good to know that Arlington County Police does pursue bike theft suspects when they have reliable information. Another alleged thief was arrested in a separate matter on Wednesday. He was caught with three stolen bikes at the time of the arrest.
I believe I had read somewhere that bike theft tends to be an organized operation, not just the act of a couple teenagers on a whim. If Arlington or D.C. police can take out some of the theft rings, that can slow down the prevalence of bike theft, at least temporarily. If enough of them get caught, then maybe more of the potential thieves will start to view the risks as being too high for the potential rewards of bike theft. One can dream.
