ParticipantPreliminary Personal List (more to come):
Grade separated crossing at the Intersection of Doom
Eads Street Cycle Track from Army Navy Drive to the 4 Mile Run Trail.
Fairfax Drive Cycle Track from the Custis Trail Connection in the West to Clarendon Circle / Northside Social in the East.
HAWK Signal at Walter Reed Drive and South Monroe Street to facilitate crossing Walter Reed Drive.
2 stage left turn box / dedicated bike signal / bike box to facilitate left turns from Clarendon Blvd to North Vietch Street.
Kirkwood Rd Road Diet and Bike Facilities between Washington Blvd and Fairfax DriveAugust 6, 2014 at 6:00 pm #1007604KLizotte
ParticipantInstall dedicated green and red turn arrows at the intersection of S Walter Reed and S Four Mile Run. Better yet, install an underpass for the W&OD through there.
Widen the bike lanes heading north on S. Joyce Street through Pentagon City.
Put in barriers to stop cars from parking in the bike lanes in front of the water park in Crystal City.
Put in underpasses wherever possible on the trails to grade separate bikes/peds from cars.
Install a cycletrack or wide bike lanes along Army Navy Drive.
Install additional bike racks in Shirlington (esp in front of Cap City!).
Improve the crossings from the four mile run trail at S Shirlington Road. Cars don’t see/ignore the ped flashing lights at the southern crossing and routinely stop in the crosswalk for the lights. Fix the lights at the northern crossing (at the start of the W&OD) so that cars cannot cross the crosswalks when there are cyclists/peds present (perhaps a four way stop light cycle for cyclists/peds? – now that would be awesome!).
Carve a cycletrack out of the Custis Memorial Parkway (near the Marriott) and leave the sidewalk to the peds.
Fix the underpass of eternal darkness along the Custis trail (by Bon Air Park). Also, that intersection needs a sign telling cyclists to turn left and go under the bridge if they wish to go to DC and not straight.
Remove/relocate road grates from any bike lanes in the county. Very dangerous!
Remove bollard collards!
Make sure all intersections have bike sensors.

Participant– Offutt proposal (or similar) to fix Lynn/Lee conflicts
– Bike traffic signal on E-bound W&OD at Columbia Pike. Should have been included in project B-8.
– Remove all bollards and replace with signage/markings or other non-hazardous indicators.
– N. side of I-66 trail extension from Quantico to Sycamore
– W&OD trail over Sycamore at EFC Metro
– Actual comfortable, safe way to travel E-bound along Rte 50 between Geo. Mason and Glebe
– Underpass under Shirlington Road connecting 4-mile run trail into Jennie Dean park and then across 4MR onto the trail (should have been built when they did the big project)

ParticipantLots of great ideas guys, keep ’em coming!

ParticipantRepave the Custis (where it hasn’t been done recently) or at least get rid of the moguls.
Same goes for the sidewalk down to the Intersection of Doom.
Fix the “bump” where the bridge meets the trail on Four Mile Run near Shirlington (the trail is sinking again).
Institute cycling classes for all students in elementary school (or perhaps middle school?) if not already offered.
Expand Cabi!
Install bicycle boulevard along/aside Columbia Pike.
Flatten Rosslyn hill. Same goes for Walter Reed
Install speed bumps/humps everywhere!!!
Eliminate most on street parking.

This is in the works. By the end of 2016 the Custis in Rosslyn should be a 16′ wide asphalt trail with a 6′ planted buffer keeping it away from the street from Lynn Street to Oak Street.

Nope, this isn’t what we (ok, at least I) want. We need true mode separation on this stretch, and it’s sad that we’re not getting it with this opportunity. Take the lane from cars, put in a nice, planted curb, leave most of it as asphalt at that level for bikes. Leave the current trail as is for peds.

Am I correct in thinking that the main conflict point here is people turning from 4MR Dr onto Walter Reed through the trail crossing?

Approved and funded. Completion tentatively expected in 2018.

Have you tried requesting some racks with this form? I’ve had good luck.

I 100% get the issue at the southern crossing. Can you give me more detail on the issues at the northern? Which street are you trying to cross and where are the problematic cars coming from? You crossing 4MR Dr vs cars turning left from Shirlington Rd onto 4MR Dr?

Agreed, do you have any specific examples of remaining grates?

I agree and think we have another good shot at it when they rebuild the Shirlington Rd bridge in a couple of years or as part of the upcoming planning for the Shirlington Crescent / Jennie Dean Park.
