    This is according to a worker on the trail. Normally trail users receive advance notice of closures, but not this time. I was told the closure was for “federal bridge inspection”.

    The Wilson Bridge has 10 travel lanes and two bike/walk lanes, so of course the bike/walk lanes are closed. More evidence that the PIC think it’s OK to —- over cyclists.

    It’s possible it’s a conspiracy theory, it’s also possible that they need to hang off the side of the bridge, and that’s where the trail happens to be.

    “conspiracy theory”?!? This insult is not appreciated. I used to bike across the 14th St Bridge all the time and they could inspect that without closing the trail.

    Saw this morning as we were coming back from Rehoboth Beach, they had a truck with a 2 man basket/bucket on a long arm. This was about 9:50am.

    The possibility does exist that it’s a different bridge with different requirements. You can take it as an insult, but “The Wilson Bridge has 10 travel lanes and two bike/walk lanes, so of course the bike/walk lanes are closed. More evidence that the PIC think it’s OK to —- over cyclists.” wasn’t exactly measured, and disregards the fact that one side of the bridge has an enormous shoulder instead of a bike trail (so it’s possible that’s why they didn’t need to close a road lane). Yeah, it sucks when they shut things down for utility vehicles, but unless it becomes routine (in which case they should plan an alternative) it’s just one of those things rather than “evidence” of anything.

    I don’t ride that way, but I’m wondering if they put up notifications for the last few weeks in advance like they do with upcoming road closures.
    So I’m certainly in no position to determine whether or not the closure is necessary for the work that they are doing, but I do feel it is appropriate to criticize the lack of notification if, in fact, they failed to do any.

    Closures to the WWB Trail are usually preceded by notices set up about 1 week in advance, but not this time. Via twitter, @MDSHA confirmed that the work may go through to Friday 7/18, but did not confirm the hours of closure each day.

    Regardless of the other points, can anyone conform if it really is open after 3:00 PM? Was thinking of commuting the long way home this week via Oxen Hill and the Wilson Bridge.

    I rode home yesterday, crossing the WW Bridge at about 6 pm.

    Thanks. If it is not raining when I leave I plan to go that way. I want to check out the new bike lanes on MLK south of Malcom X Ave.
