despite having taken the bike work 10 times now (6 last year, and 4 this year including Bike to Near Drowning Day) I had never taken the bike out for a lunch time spin. This past weekend wife and I had some errands in the Navy Yard area – but she wanted to go to synagogue first, and I (may I be forgiven) preferred to skip it. So we agreed I would ride in and she would drive and meet me (so it was bike to errands day). I got there earlier (16bus to AF memorial to Crystal City to Mason to what apparently is my last ride on beloved Water Street to 7th SW (where I did utter a brief prayer – G-d protect me while I take this lane) and then Eye Street. Since I had time I biked over to 8th SE. Didn’t have time to bike home (cause our day in town went late, and I still don’t have good enough lights for after dark riding) so locked it at the USDOT garage.
I SHOULD have biked it home earlier in the week, but a string of mishaps involving misplacing the helmet, and just forgetfulness, and misguided caution about the weather forecast, prevented that.
So bike was still here today. And I can’t bike it home cause we are meeting friends for dinner in upper NW. And besides we will be going out of town this weekend.
Disliking being off the bike that long when the weather is so nice, I decided to bike over to Barracks row for lunch.
My observations
1. Its a handy thing to do. barracks row is a longish walk, but a nice quick ride
2. L Street is a great alt to M Street, and 7th is a good alt to 8th street
3. Plenty of good bike parking
4. Two bike shops on the same block (like M street in Georgetown). Hmmmm. They seemed to have nice deals on hybrids, which did not please me, but I do not regret my purchase.
5. I would have hoped eateries there would have lunch specials, but few did (and those were pricey.) Ended up getting a sandwich at the bakery
6. To the woman who was biking from the bakery with a challah bread strapped most appropriately to her pannier – good shabbos.
