Cool Strava feature…who just rode by me?

I just read an article about some of the features that Strava has on their Labs project page. There’s an Activity Playback page where you can see who else was on the ride or did a “fly-by” at some point during the ride.

For example, this shows my Vasaloppet ride and who was also riding along.

This is brilliant — and mesmerizing. GuyContinental and I were always moaning that it was too bad that Strava couldn’t tell me the people I pass daily going in the opposite direction. Looks like they heard us.

Very cool. It’d be great if Strava could make my phone buzz in-real-time when a friend is nearby so I can say hello!

I’d like Strava to just send a curt yet polite salutory text to my friends who ride by so I don’t actually have to talk to them.

I can see this being akin to texting while driving with cyclists giving rapt attention to their devices as their bikes veer over the center line into an on-coming bike. Or, maybe I’m just a Luddite.

Obviously I’m an idiot: I’ve tried this gizmo with rides that I *know* that I either passed someone I know coming the opposite direction, or rode with someone I know, and I see nothing but my own stupid face in a circle by itself. No one likes me! Not even Strava! :mad::confused::p

Maybe it doesn’t work if the rides are private (just an idea – I haven’t tested).

It amuses me that the Strava playback is actually sensitive enough to show that I stopped at each of the stop lights along my route.
