ParticipantI’m interested to see if they’re going to have a frame fixture – if not, it could be a good machining project for a motivated individual or group of individuals if TechShop were willing to pay for materials. Plans are free and easily sourced from teh intarwebs. My only gripe is that they don’t offer a way to opt out of the classes, like, take a test rather than plunk down $55 and sit through a class where you know all the material just to get access to miter saw. It was a very good sign that they’ve installed a SawStop table saw, tho.

ParticipantWow I had no idea that they were going to be this kind of place. I was afraid it would be yet another store at which to buy tech gadgets.
But a welding shop!??! Holy fark, the mind spins with possibilities…. That pony-up is a bit of a barrier though; would have to see what they offer before throwing down.

ParticipantTechShop is amazing. I’ve paid for my membership and am anxiously awaiting their March 29th grand opening.

ParticipantI went to the open house last weekend. There wasn’t too much to see at that point. None of the machines were connected yet, although many were already there. They have a few rows of computers for CAD work. It just looked like a big warehouse space with various objects in some spots. One smaller section will be visible from Crystal Drive. It’ll be interesting to walk by and look at the machines in operation. The main area is inside the Crystal City Shops, but only about 50 ft. from the main entrance.

ParticipantThe membership seems high, but honestly, depending on the quality and availability of their tools its probably quite reasonable. Places that the public has access to high-end woodworking/metalworking/welding/etc equipment is very sparse. I’m looking at joining NoVA labs, a makerspace in Reston. They are more reasonably priced (50/month) but their tool collection is eclectic since its mostly what members or area companies have donated (or built themselves, in the case of their cnc and 3d printers).

ParticipantOpening date has been delayed. The new date hasn’t been set. They are hopeful that this is just a short-term delay, maybe a week (?), but they aren’t certain yet. They said they would post the new opening date on social media (Facebook, Twitter).

I figured you were all set for tools after seeing your bike storage! Don’t you own a woodworking company anyway? My CNC sits idle for far too long… if you want time on that puppy I’ll gladly take your money

ParticipantNew circular bike parking racks are being added along Crystal Drive, including some directly in front of the new TechShop entrance.

The exterior paneling is made of acrylic/plastic panels, colored to resemble iron or steel. Maybe they can add some wood beams in the future. The metal coloring looks a bit dark. Plus it gives the impression that they only have metalworking tools there. They also cover woodworking, plastics and fabrics, so why not add those materials to the exterior walls somehow?
Anyway, the shop is taking shape. Passersby will be able to look in through the windows and see what types of equipment they have.

ParticipantOpening has been delayed again, possibly for another brief period. They will post the new opening date once it has been rescheduled.

ParticipantThe new opening date is supposed to be Wed. Apr. 16, tomorrow morning. They have already delayed the opening twice, so it’s not official until it actually happens.
P.S. We, the Pizza will open next door to TechShop a couple weeks later. The new pizza restaurant is owned by the Mendelsohn family, who also runs Good Stuff Eatery on the other side of TechShop. People at TechShop won’t be able to say that there’s no place to eat nearby.

ParticipantStarting on March 20th, TechShop will stay open 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week.
I’ve seen some bike frames in the bike room, so someone has been working on bikes there. I don’t know what they have been making though. Hoverbikes? Bikes with “inertial dampers”?
