Why not add a twist to the popular coffee club culture we have going on in DC!?! Inspired by chasing mailboxes coffeeneuring rules addition of the coffee shop without walls this past year and by the many great pictures coming out of other parts of the country from similar outings I’m going to try and start doing this weekly…

I’m not going to commit to a single day but will aim to avoid the Friday and Wednesday club conflicts. Weather, projected sunrise conditions and location may dictate a floating day. I’ll use this thread to put out the details whenever I’m going to do trail side coffee but anyone else in the area doing the same should feel welcome to put it out here!

So after the ‘soft opening’ inaugural morning last week I’ll propose this coming Thursday, same location. The sunrise is likely to be anti climactic and it won’t be particularly warm, so it’s definitely a ‘love of the game’ situation!

    0630, (sunrise is 0643)
LBJ Memorial Grove (off the MV Trail) http://www.nps.gov/lyba/index.htm
-you have to go through the Columbia Island Marina parking lot (it’s worth it!)

Rain location – under the northern span of the 14th st bridge on the MV trail

Depending on response I may try and bring more coffee to brew multiple pots but by default I’ll usually only bring enough for two large pour over cups, if you bring your own brewer like a French press with grounds and water I’ll have enough fuel to heat up your water!

Maybe this is a silly question, but which part of the park is the “grove”? Sometimes I cut through there from CC/Pent/VA, but I’ve never stopped to smell the roses. or the coffees. Count me a definite solid maybe.

I think the grove is basically the area at the nortwest end of the parking lot.

I don’t usually hit that area until about 7:45 at the earliest. If I stop by, I’ll need to leave home early.

Not a silly question… actually I was having second thoughts about using a semi-obscure location for the first meet up. But in my opinion it’s worth the small hassle…. the grove is the full wooded area with path but I’m proposing the central memorial with the benches around the stone plinth. There is an open view across the river towards the Monuments from that location.

    If you can see the view in this picture;

You’ll already be able to see me setting up coffee… and you’ll be there!

I usually ride through there on my way to the pentagon just before 6:30. I will look for you on Thursday and will try and stop to say hello.

It’s a long shot, but I’ll actually try and be there. I’ve got a downtown meeting that it wouldn’t hurt me to be early for. :D

    Rock on!

Good news is, looks like the clouds will clear up and we’re going to have an excellent shot at a sunrise… On the slightly more down side, it’ll be pretty darn cold! Make sure you bring an extra layer to keep warm while you’re off the bike!

    See you in the morning!

I will not be able to make it. I’ve got work to get done before work. I love the idea though!

Nice morning for coffee, not quite as cold, not quite as clear as I was anticipating but a nice way to get started with the work day.
