    Construction Updates

    (Updated January 2014)

Columbia Pike and Washington Boulevard Weekend Closures

Columbia Pike will be closed in both directions between South Queen Street and South Orme Street for the next three weekends (Jan. 31-Feb. 2, Feb. 7-9 and Feb. 14-16) as crews finish demolishing the old Washington Boulevard bridge. Closures will be from 9 p.m. each Friday to 4:30 a.m. Monday. Traffic will be detoured around the work zone via the interchange ramps and temporary pavement.

This work is part of the VDOT project to replace the Washington Boulevard bridge over Columbia Pike. The project will be complete in summer 2015.

[New traffic pattern, closures at Columbia Pike and Washington Boulevard

Beginning Thursday, Jan. 30, drivers heading to I-395 from eastbound Columbia Pike in Arlington will use a new traffic pattern:

    – Traffic going to I-395 North will turn left at the signal on South Quinn Street. At the top of the ramp, traffic will then bear right and merge onto Washington Boulevard.

    – Traffic going to I-395 South will head straight through the light at South Quinn Street and use the ramp on the right.

This traffic pattern will be in place for about 8-12 months. Work to complete the switch will take place between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Jan. 30, weather permitting. The backup date is Friday, Jan. 31. Message signs will be in place to notify drivers of the new traffic pattern.]

Work crews have set up a bike detour, running alongside the car detour route. Part of the bike detour runs in a protected section of the road, in effect a temporary cycletrack. Other sections have rough patches. Plus there is a signalized grade crossing of Washington Blvd.

It appears that the center section of the old bridge is already gone, as of yesterday. Large cranes with pneumatic drills were chipping away at the exposed sections on both sides of Columbia Pike. We’ll see how well the work crews clean up the road and sidewalk in between the weekend demolitions. By next month, there will be a lot more clearance under the bridge, but the sidewalk might still be in rough shape, until the project is completed next year. Maybe they can add a smoother temporary path under the new bridge once demolition is complete.
