Hi guys. Just joined the Forum today. I’ve been commuting by bicycle since I moved to DC years ago and love it. I moved here from a place where driving was required to do anything, and being able to get around by bicycle was high on my list of criteria in selecting a place to live. … I applaud the bike lanes, the Metro, the coming streetcar, and the growing realization that an appealing, liveable city requires making the safety, comfort, and enjoyment of people the top priority. Well, enough soap box for today. Hit me up and we’ll take a bike ride–I ride all year with only ice or snow on the roads stopping me, and that doesn’t happen much.

ParticipantWelcome to the forum! We’re a bit batty but very nice. Your attitude certainly fits in with the group’s ethos. Try to make it to one of the coffee clubs so you can meet everyone (Swings near the White House on Friday mornings is a good one). Pretty soon you’ll start recognizing people about town which is always fun. You’ll surely see Dirt floating about. During the warm weather we also have monthly happy hours.

ParticipantWhere do you live / where do you ride? What do you ride?
Definitely try to make it to a Friday Morning Coffee Club (FMCC). FMCC II meets in Arlington at the Java Shack between 7 and 9ish

I work in SW DC and I walk around at lunch time and see the ten lanes of 395 in a canyon that forbids people.
I work in SE DC – I’ve ridden to work a half dozen times and my route takes me right by where you work – 14st bridge to Water to 7th to the Eye street bike lanes across to SE.
There are going to be bike improvements coming there – the Wharf project should address the complexity of the current Maine/Water Street/watefront choice, and DC envisions eventually putting a cycle track (IE protected bike lane) on Eye Street.

Not an acceptable excuse!

ParticipantAs everyone has already stated, welcome to our forum. Although we occasionally bicker over silly things, as a whole we function much like a family…. at the end of the day we still like each other and want the same things, many of which you mentioned in your opening. Glad to have you on board and I look forward to seeing you on the roads. Be safe.

ParticipantSW DC is changing slowly, but yeah, the highway spaghetti pile is one big mess over there. It’s unpleasant traveling between the National Mall and the SW Waterfront. Although a lot of changes need to be made, if they could just repurpose one of the buildings in the L’Enfant Plaza area, so that it had more activity outside of regular business hours, it could help to enliven that neighborhood.

Interesting that you mentioned the Mall/Waterfront route. On one of my lunchtime forays on foot, I walked up L’Enfant Plaza to the fountain at the end and there read one of those history walk stations that said the original L’Enfant Plaza plan was for the Plaza to connect the Mall with the river, and that the Plaza would have culturally enriching and recreational resources along its length. No need for a new plan, just implement the original one. Currently the Plaza ends short of the river, with multiple lanes of Maine Ave. and then a hodgepodge of parking lots between the Plaza and the river, and at the Mall end of the Plaza there’s an office building with no street level vendors. Just dreaming, but wouldn’t it be great to have a car free connection between the Mall and the river, connecting to a car free esplanade along the river. Maybe someday … .

Hard core dude! I find that when the road has snow on it the only exposed pavement is the two tracks where the cars drive, and the space between the moving and the parked cars, where I ride, is covered with snow, and possibly piled with plowed snow.

Oh ignore Dread. He is one of those metal-head cyclists who rides in shorts down to -32 degrees, backwards, and twice on fridays. He watched too many zombie movies and goes flying down the WOD yelling BRAINS BRAINS!!!
Someday we hope he might buy a real bike, maybe get a real job (you know, so he will spend less time of bike forums), move to Arlington, and settle down a little. We’re pulling for you Shawn!

ParticipantI don’t remember taking that picture…
And I’m from Los Angeles, so I consider 50 deg to be jacket weather.

Just come to Arlington, they have plans to clear snow and ice from the major bike transportation routes. Oh wait, that was an unsupported rumor, never mind.
